Hi all,

I’m looking for a new TV - maximum size of 55 but 50 maybe better for the room/viewing distance.

Any suggestions as I’m struggling with the amount of choice?

Requirements/usage:
- General tv - Netflix etc
- Bit of gaming but nothing serious
- We don’t have an aerial so it is possible to get live free view TV via an app?

Thank you!

Will it be used by persons likely to leave Sky TV guides or News broadcasts with static clock graphics etc. on-screen for an hour solid or more while they mindlessly wander off elsewhere?

If so, OLED may not be a wise choice.

What is the room size / viewing distance? TVs 'shrink' over time so going bigger than you think you might need/want is no bad thing.

It's easy to go down a rabbit hole all I know is I got a mid-range 55" LG OLED and it's bloody awesome.

Personal view is ignore the apps on the TV where possible and treat it as a display and feed it a good source.

I wouldn't...

I was looking at a HiSense TV eralier in the year in Currys, and was speaking to an assistant who actually knew his stuff. He was pretty insistent that a HiSense would be a bad idea, and that a huge proportion get returned.

I think a lot depends on which user interface you prefer - I stuck with Samsung in the end as I find theirs pretty intuitive.

What HiFi do a lot of good reviews to have a mooch over

Go to somewhere decent like Richer Sounds or John Lewis, spend some time to actually view some in person. Nothing else matters.
Or alternatively just throw a supermarket special into your trolley and be done with it.

Rule # 1. NEVER listen to sales staff at Currys. They don't know their ar$e from their elbow.

Rule # 2. NEVER buy anything from Currys. They don't know their ar$e from their elbow.

Get along to Costco for an included 5 yr warranty.

I'm in year 6 of a 65" Hisense and it's been absolutely faultless.

Our Sony started playing up so replaced with an LG B4, is a few years old so bit cheaper than the newer B5 but great screen, was well recommended on AV forums. Looks like the 55 is about £750.

Has loads of extra free channels in the LG TV app

TCL were also spoken of highly.

You can get the Hisense TVs from John Lewis with a five year warranty.
I'd be surprised if they were offering that if they were failing so often.

Just bought one of these. Seems decent value with good sound. Includes Fire TV so access to Netflix, Amazon etc. without an additional dongle. I used ChatGPT to narrow down my selection.

If you don’t fancy any of the TV sets that have Freely (BBC/ITV/C4 over the internet) built into the set, they just launched a stand-alone Freely box, although the first release has immediately sold out - https://www.freely.co.uk/products/streaming-device...

got my old mum a samsung 55" a month or so back for £530
Great picture
decent sound
all the connectivity she needs

Could have got it online £50 less but local shop came and set it up, took her old one away, had a 5 yr warranty etc. Plus it's good to shop local

It may be this one but the choice is bewildering as you know

I didn’t buy from Curry’s, but he actually knew a lot about the technologies. There are some good people there.

I get a discount from Samsung via work so they got the sale

John Lewis and Sevenoaks also have the 5 year warranty. Richer Sounds is 6 years.

Sony Bravia 8ii is getting rave reviews, though it is at the pricier end of the market

That’s what I have, very pleased (atthough it has lost a couple of features over the 8 Mark i). That was the reason I suggested the new Freely set top box to get live terrestial TV over internet without an aerial or sat dish, which was part of the OP’s requirement

Without an aerial you'll need a tv with Freely built in unless you go for something like the BT tv box pro

Freely is why I suggested the Hisense.

The Panasonic I just bought (see above) has freely, and Now TV, plus Fire TV already installed. I don’t intend to connect it to an arial either.
