Clearly Lacks Sense - it's a diesel CLS!
Discussion
I've been on the hunt for a daily for a fair while. I've been going through the whole catalogue; budget creep, man maths (I almost man mathed my way into an E63 AMG lol), dislike, infatuation, blinkeredness, obsessedness, to end up with a car I had ruled out almost immediately.
I started off with the idea of looking for a Mercedes E350 CDi, in w212 chassis flavour. When I couldn't find one with the spec I wanted, I moved onto Audi A8, Mercedes S320 CDi, then Audi A4 Quattro 2.0t, Audi S4 TFSi, Audi A6 3.0tdi Quattro, BMW 640GC, BMW 530d, 535d, 740d, 335d X-Drive, 320i X-Drive, you get the picture....
So what did I get? A 90k miles, 2011 Mercedes Benz CLS350 CDi, with little service history, a dead battery and a stuck open thermostat.
I did get £300 knocked off for the battery, and promptly went to Halfords who supplied and fitted one for £184. £116 up!
But, it's not a bad car. Thermostat will be done once I put the warranty claim in with the dealer's warranty company.

Thermostat aside, the only other issue is that the blind spot assist is faulty. It works for a short while, but will then put up an inoperative message. Radar cruise, lane detect all work fine. If anyone has any insight on this then I am all ears!
Here's the pics.

The fault!

The price for all this goodness? £6950. How did I do?

Hell of a car for the money and a hell of a car in general.
Between me and my partner we've had 3x CLSs, hers was the previous generation 350CDI, we've had that same engine in an S Class and two MLs. The CLS was my favourite though. Genuinely quick car, good on fuel and a really comfortable cruiser. Of all the four door saloons the CLS gets a bit overlooked.
Great car OP and for a daily car, a really good choice.

Thanks everyone! It seems though that I have an issue with the car already that I wasnt expecting. Driving this evening, all was ok, and then I noticed the coolant temp was non existent and the air from the vents was cool. Pulled up, radiator fan is on and the header tank feels cool, but has coolant in it.
Air lock? Would seem a bit odd after covering some 550 miles in it.

Turn it off for around 20 seconds (key out of the ignition) & you'll find it clears.Air lock? Would seem a bit odd after covering some 550 miles in it.
Get the car read & clear existing codes in the car.

What I don't understand though is that the header tank was cold. This suggests a stuck closed thermostat, even though it has been behaving like a stuck open one until now.
Great cars
I had a 12 plate one paid £11k for it in 2023 and it serves me well. Was incredibly quick when moving and a lovely thing to drive, only sold because of the CAZ in Bristol.
Couple points if you haven't noticed but the DAB reception is shocking and the doors are small so had difficulties with people getting in and out without hitting their head (worse with car seats)
Edit to say WBAC gave me £6900 for it after 15 months 😬

I'll read the codes, but I'm going to assume it's a temp sensor issue that tricked the rad fan into going over time? The only thing I did different was I didn't have a/c on.

This worked, drove home and the temp got up to 60 degrees, heat from vents and the header tank was warm, rather than hot.

It was happening on my E500 randomly but that always worked, I had the codes cleared & touch wood it hasn't happened for years now.I'll read the codes, but I'm going to assume it's a temp sensor issue that tricked the rad fan into going over time? It was like not all the sensors had woken with the rest of the car.

, get the wheels redone in Silver/Anthracite (in time) it'll be a sensor playing up get the car read & it should show which one.
