Im after "a box" that will connect to my existing old-school hifi via regular RCA interconnect lead and play MP3s and FLAC files from an external USB.

Requirements:
- Can handle a 256mb USB thumbdrive (and also maybe a powered portage USB drive)
- Has some kind of display on the front to see what file is playing / USB folder structure
- Has a remote control
- Is fairly small
- plays all regular audio file formats
- The cheaper the better

Any suggestions?
A bit of googling brings up some dubious looking things offered by AliExpress and Temu etc, but i dont want to be stung by something that (for example) only recognises 8GB USB drives, or doesnt do FLAC or something.

I realise the other option is to by a 2nd hand all-in-one system and connect another set of small speakers but would like to use the existing hardware

A WiiM Ultra would do it, but probably not "cheap" by your definition.

Change the USB drive to digital hard storage or an SD type card and the world is your Lobster:

Edited to add, you could go fully wireless with a unit like those above by adding:

Can't you just stream from your phone via Bluetooth/ WiFi? Then all you need is a receiver rather than something with a screen and physical inputs.

If you can’t find all that in one affordable box, the Yamaha WXAD-10 basically adds AirPlay to your existing stereo amp and you play to it from your phone or MacBook. Sounds great, it’s very reliable and the control app is good. No built-in display or USB

No longer produced, new units on eBay around £100
