Going to look at a 2013 Cooper D. No experience of the older diesel engines (other than my F54 diesel) so anything I need to look at other than the usual checks?

Forget it and look for a newer F series instead. 2013 R5x generation has the N47 engine with a penchant for sh!tting the timing chain with catastrophic results. Who knows what servicing neglect it has already suffered in 12 years. I stupidly helped a friend look for a replacement MINI a couple of years ago and we found a nice 2013 Cooper D, but it lasted only about 6 months before the chain tensioner failed without any warning.

Its replacing an F54 diesel that is knackered at 97K.

It has a "full service history" and is priced appropriately for the age and mileage.

I have a local indie who can replace the chain for <500

I prefer the r56 to f56 as a car to "drive", I still have one of each now, this is a "spare"

Just look for one with a recent chain & clutch replacement & good service from that point. Then map out the EGR asap and clean the inlet manifold out, and make sure you do oil changes every 6k miles.

I was waiting for your comment. You've probably played with more of these than most.

Well... deal is done. 2012 Cooper D with.... wait for it... 114K on the clock.

MOT's all clear, never even an advisory and a full service history was claimed but the paperwork is a bit patchy, however it looks like oil at least every 20K. The clutch is good and it had a new turbo at 90K.

To my mind that suggests it was being looked after and the chain was done at some point (logic makes me think why spend 1.5K on turbo etc if you hadn't done the chain previously). At least I can hope that.

Noise wise it started cold this morning 8C without any rattle or clatter. Sounded like a petrol, certainly MUCH better than my old F54 diesel.

I'm going to run it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes before I spend anything more on it and if it seems to be reasonable I'll bring it up to the same standard as my other (petrol) R56.

How do I map the EGR out?
