I just acquired an 85 1/2 Porsche 944 with 208,000 km, zero rust, lovely condition. I also try to do most of my own work. It was slow starting in humid weather so I changed the plugs, which needed it, and it starts fine now. What I wonder is, would I be able to replace the points myself? I've only done points on old tractors. I would guess they need replacing since the plugs were so bad. The harness is as new so I don't see a problem in the wiring. Any other easy tuneup jobs I should consider?
Also I need to replace one or both of the hood lifters. How can I tell if both are bad--the hood sinks slowly.
Re winter driving, is the 944 reasonably stable on winter roads or should I carry 200 lbs of sand in the trunk as I need to on my Supra? If I mount winter snow treads is there any need to replace the front M+S tires for careful winter driving?
Any advice appreciated.

I cannot remember seeing Brian post in this forum so I'll try and answer your questions.
The 944 does not have points, so you cannot replace them! Most 44's seem to have a slow lazy start up, no idea why its just a sort of characteristic. If its getting too slow then it could be the battery or the starter itself that's at fault.
As for winter driving I've tried summer tyres, no added weight and a spot of snow, traction was laughable! So if you intend to drive in snowy/icey conditions you need good winter tyres and maybe a couple of sand bags. If you can't get hold of sandbags then a dead body or two will suffice.

I used to drive my old 82 trans-am in Calgary on summer tyres without any added traction - it was great fun, only really scary on sheet ice. So a car as well balanced as a 944 should be fine without additional ballast.
