The latest net migration figures have landed and its down a lot as a percentage, however what seems to be missing from the discussion is why? The number of arrivals are still close to a million but Brits are leaving in huge numbers, think a city the size of Plymouth every year.

Surely this is a scandal? These will be people with skills, motivation and get up and go that are leaving in huge numbers!

These will by and large be people seeking a better life somewhere else, exactly the same as the migrants coming to the UK.

My daughter is a final year medical student; a significant portion of her cohort plan to go to Australia if they can.

Part of the reason will be the media and many politicians (who bang on about being patriots) constantly talking the uk down, its a self fulfilling prophecy.

Also interestingly Dubai seems to be a popular destination for people who moan about shariah law and muslims taking over the country.

Each to their own but why you would want to love in a place where things like same sex relationships and affairs are ilegal and could be punished by death escapes me.

The UK ultimately is a great place to live

Australia is s great country wouldn’t want to live there again though, maybe when im retired but it’s simply too far from friends and family and i didn’t like the climate.

Was going to start a post on this as it seems to be the current trend on social media of business owners throwing a hissy fit saying they can't wait to move to Dubai, Australia, Italy, wherever. Be interesting to see how many actually do...

Yes, it's not a great situation currently but even if I was a big business owner I'd work to enjoy the fruits of my labour with close friends and family so I don't really see the point in moving to the other side of the world just to save a few quid. But that's just me.

You can't blame them though tbf, Labour will destroy this country in just 5 years. Over tax everyone incl business, watch the very best people leave whilst welcoming millions of workshy tts imho. Recipy for success.

If you think the welfare bill is bad today just go look at the projections.

It's something that definately needs a deep dive

It's pretty much about quality in verses out

We know that large numbers of British professionals are leaving, not just the rich but the skilled

In 2022 7000 U.K. Doctor's left to work abroad and the 2023 is higher.

Australian and NZ Police are actively recruiting U.K. and Irish Police officers and a large number have gone or are in the process of leaving as two examples

In my own family I have a niece and two nephews that have gone, a teacher, civil engineer and a Dr

It's not a question I can easily answer but it's not positive if we are exchanging high quality professionals for low quality unskilled people

Its really not a great place to live. I used to be a high earner but gave up work when they wanted an extra 15% out of my income (IR35). I own rental property in the UK but taxes just keep going up, and I really can't justify it as an investment. The vast majority of my non property investments are foreign markets. Its cold and wet outside and will be for the next 6 months.

Our politicians are idiots and just going to get worse. Its not talking the UK down, its my lived experience. Life here just seems to dark and depressing.

I'll probably not end up in Dubai (my father lived in the middle east for 20+ years, and my brother has been in Dubai for 7 years). I'll likely move to one of the canary islands. I'm out there looking at property in the new year.

Exactly. People moaning about how bad it is must be the worst thing about the UK for me at the moment. Snowflakes is the term I think.

A close mate did exactly this about ten years ago. He is an orthopaedic surgeon.

Hated Perth and came back after 15 months......

Well i disagree. And it all depends on your perspective, you seem to dislike the climate? Which is personal, Ive lived in Australia, I hated the climate.

If you think politicians being idiots is unique to the UK you might be in for a shock if you move.

You also seem to be motivated by money, which is fine but it doesn’t automatically make the uk a bad place to live.

Perth is ridiculously isolated, with a huge drug and mental health problem especially with the young.

Lots of different climates are available in Australia.

I found Melbourne just lovely, but Brisbane was unbearable.

Yep, it has the dual problem of being both incredibly boring and obsenely up it's own arse.

If I moved back (which I doubt I will) Perth would be one of the last places I'd go.

Melbourne is nicer than Brisbane that’s for sure.

I missed the definite seasons of the UK and Ive never been as cold as I was in Sydney in winter due to their absolutely shocking build quality of the old house with no heating or double glazing and the tin roof! Why they think those roofs are good in a place where it rains a lot is beyond me :-)

I presume a lot of the Australian types are on youth visas so will be back soon enough anyway.

A lot of the Dubai fans will rapidly realise that it's not what it used to be, if it ever was.

However, once you're gone for what you think is temporarily, you may well decide to continue heading outwards.

Anyone can spend a short while reading about daily life in Australia and NZ to realise they have a load of their own problems with quality of life. I can only assume they pay very significantly more to poach the skilled.

If I was motivated by money I'd still be working. I just refuse to spend more time working for the governments pockets than my family's. I value my time more.

Few people like the winter here. As I said the Canaries appeal most at the moment. Its like a typical British summer 365 days a year.
