I did a bit of a search but for an up to date advice please.

In Jan we are off for a few weeks to Malaga and surrounding areas.
In week one we want to pick up a small car at the airport and keep it for a week , preferably returning to Malaga town rather than airport .

I am seeking ease above lowest cost , just wanting least hassle, especially at pick up point at airport , that I read can be bad . I have not found all aspects of Malaga airport run smoothly every time .

Thanks

Join the VIP club for RecordGo or Goldcar

You can do it online and then you get a better price and no line to wait in. Goldcar provide the keys from a vending machine and you can complete all the forms on a screen without talking to anyone. Same with RecordGo but you have to talk to a human to get the keys.

Both also offer a "just go" which means zero deposit and no checks when you return the car. Does cost a bit more but it's worth it

Both are at the far end of car hire so there is a good 5 min walk from when you leave the terminal

I've used both perfectly happily for years

We've used Auto-Flores for years.

Meet & greet outside of the Arrivals building, generally less than 50m to the car.

We drop off in the terminal car park when we're done - simply popping the keys through a part opened window and sending them a photo of the car's parking spot. They may well offer similar if you wanted to leave the car in Malaga itself - you'd have to ask.

Always had great service from them, never any issues.

I used Malagacar.com and from arrival to leaving with car (pre-booked) was about 5 minutes. I had to show them documents and passport, they gave me teh keys, pointed to the car parked outside and off we went (once i had worked out I needed to have my foot on the brake to start the car!)

I used Europcar through easyJet last time (about 7 years ago) and no hassle at all. The car was brand new with 4km on the odometer. Even the radio mast was still in a little bag on the passenger seat!

If I ever need a 4-seat car, then I use Marbesol all-inclusive with Club membership.

Genuinely hassle free. I have been using them since 2000

If I want to leave a car at the airport, then I also use their undercover parking service.

I can't help with specific hire companies in Malaga, but if you book a hire direct with the hire company, rather than through a consolidator and take out full insurance direct with the hire company then you should be able to get them to collect the hire car from your hotel. Just park the car and leave the keys with reception. This doesn't work with 3rd party excess cover.

It's definitely more expensive done this way but the convenience might be worth it for you.

Second this, we’ve used them multiple times without a single issue they’ve always been very straight forward and good value

Recently used Centauro at Malaga which is off-airport. Had difficulty finding the mini bus as the airport is huge but find Centauro very good (after using them at Barcelona).

They do the usual credit card block when you decline the upgrade but in both offices, I had absolutely no problem at dropoff, no extensive forensic examination and prompt removal of the block, on return.

If you're one for all in, book in advance as the upgrade at the office seemed expensive.

I've used all in companies but they are expensive, by comparison. One was in the multi-storey, the other also off-airport.

Goldcar with their full insurance package. Will almost certainly be the cheapest option (with included insurance) and will also likely be 'in terminal' pick up and drop off.

The terrible (and it really is terrible) reputation of Goldcar is almost exclusively related to the use of third party insurance cover.

DO NOT use Weego or OK Mobility. Charlatans who try to extract as many ££'s out of you as they can, and stories of payments being taken for spurious damage.
We used WIBER in 2024. They were great. Just took the credit card payment on hold and released it when we returned a week later.
All of ours were off site. Bit of a ballache but not too bad.

I generally use whoever has the best deal. Over the years Goldcar, Avis, Budget, etc..

So far I've never had an issue. Was out for 10 days a few weeks back & used Goldcar. £70 for 10 days.

Only time I've had any damage & I was with a company that were from our local town. They had a fully comprehensive insurance policy, car got bit of a bash whilst parked. Reported it to them during the hire period & they said don't worry no problem. And it wasn't.

Oh contrair - It's almost exclusively not using ANY insurance and people arriving ill prepared (without the credit card they paid for it with them). They arrive, face the hard sell, pay through the nose for insurance and get in a strop. Or they arrive, refuse the insurance, but don't have the CC they used, so can't have the deposit blocked on their card, get in a sttop, or they arrive, go for no imsurance at all, then get in a strop when they get stung for 100s of euros for damage.

I've used the for years in Alicante and Malaga and never had a problem (own insurance) BUT, I watch the above play out almost every time with someone in front of me (patiently waiting for them to strop off).

You can of course pay for their insurance, if you don't mind throwing away money. Lots don't mind, and they know it.

Hmm. I bagged a Ford Ka+ with WIBER for £19 in Mallorca and declined their exhorbitant upgrade. From then on, I became a 9th class citizen, made to wait, they went over the car with a fine tooth comb. On leaving, I had a half tank not a full tank but pressed on as it was late, taking a camera photo to prove. On return, a super long forensic exam of the car, when they finally served everybody else. The fuel issue was blown out of proportion and I had to get my photo off my camera to send to them. Absolutely appalling.

I tried them again at Alicante but they again made you feel totally paranoid though, on this occasion, the return was uneventful.

I can’t recommend RecordGo, we have used them loads over the years, but the past 2 visits we have had a 2 hour+ wait even though there were only a handful of people in the queue in front of us. I won’t be using them again, it was a nightmare with a toddler.

Next time I’ll probably go with Helle Hollis, though you do have to walk/ get a bus to it which is a pain, or for a couple of days Del Paso, which is ste, but very cheap biggrin and they have never messed us about.

Would rather walk than ever use Goldcar again (yes, I did have third party cover).

Oddly, my experience with OK mobility was very good (at Malaga) - car was clean, undented etc and my deposit was released by the time I got off the plane back home.

Guess it goes to show that you never really know how it’s going to go.

I suspect that HOW the car is returned counts for a lot. With Centauro, we had time to spare so gave it a cheap jet wash before returning it. For 2 Euros, why not. They also removed the block in under an hour.

I should point out that my Goldcar experience was in Malta so not really fair to say that they would be the same at Malaga.

The car itself was something that I think even Mat Armstrong would hesitate to take on but it was dark, late and we were virtually pushed out of the compound biggrin

I've been going to Malaga for 20 years and used a variety of car hire places. Mixed experiences with most of them to be honest. Goldcar for example were great one year, then faffed me about on fuel surcharge and insurance the next year. Same with many of the others.

Been using Malagacar the last while and they've been great, and unless their service suddenly worsens I'll be sticking with them.
