RLE cataract/vision eye surgery ?
Discussion
Saw there was a thread for this but it was ancient so decided to start a new one.
I am 55 and wear glasses, used to wear lenses but now cant be bothered, had new glasses and have not been all that happy with them, was driving the other night and my vision was fine, but feel it could be sharper, appreciate age plays a part and wont ever be like a 20 year old (mine werent that great at 20)
My Brother in Law had cataracts coming on, so he got it on the NHS and has gone from like -9 in both eyes to perfect distance vision.
So I am thinking about having RLE done rather than persevering and waiting for cataracts to maybe precipitate it, get a good few years out of it with decent vision and no, or less reliance on specs or lenses.
Appreciate its not cheap, thinking 6/7 grand but eyesight is so fundamental and glasses and lenses are that cheap anyway.
So, anyone had it since the last thread ended in 2019, any suggestions of where to go and what type of lenses are recommended ?

There’s a lot of different options here, which will be impacted by how good/bad your vision is without spectacles at present (the baseline), your current spectacle prescription, your day to day activities, any other ocular health issues (eg dry eyes) and your location.
Some of the options will involve still needing spectacles for near tasks (eg reading) and intermediate tasks (eg car dashboard).
Best to get an up to date eye examination and ask to discuss the different options.

I had cataracts surgery about 6 years ago. I was 45 at the time.
I was very myopic, ((about -8) but also wore varifocal s as my near vision was going too.
Now, I have perfect far vision but still wear varifocals for close up work. Really very effective.
If you need reading glasses too, there are options like multifocal lens or fitting a different focal distance to each eye. I decided against this as I felt it was too risky....I have a few other complications to add to the mix so wanted a simple solution......

I had cataract surgery in both eyes late last year. My distance vision was much improved as a result but I still needed glasses for driving and reading. There is a risk with cataract surgery however. I have since had detached retinas in both eyes. Twice in my left and once in my right which has impacted by vision. I had a combination of risk factors, the surgery was one, along with being short sighted and being in my early sixties. As you get older, your vitreous can shrink and cause a tear in the retina which then peels away. I had my cataracts done privately and although I signed the disclaimers I didn’t clearly understand the cumulative risk factors as they were not fully explained to me so please be careful.
