So I was approaching an overtaking lane yesterday, I had been following a black XC90 which infront of it was a Fiesta, doing around 45/50mph.

I was behind them for say 20miles or so, when we got to the dual section, I passed both of them, I was doing 86mph then just as I pulled back in out of nowhere, the old blue lights appeared on the volvo (unmarked) I slowed down but it passed me then on the rear window a LED board lit up saying " watch your speed" and then it carried on as normal.

Never had that happen before, I was sure I was for getting pulled over and so on...........

Now would that be because they have no fixed speed camera in the Volvo so they physically couldn't prove speed, or because they wanted to give a warning and carry on?

To be fair it's not like I was driving like a d1ck for ages, it was just a blurt of speed to pass the 2 vehicles in a safe manner (other than the speed) and I pulled in.

Perhaps they just recognised that your driving was fine, but felt they ought to do something as you were right under their noses, particularly as in that distance you might have spotted that they were bib?

Seems fair to me!

I've had exactly the same thing, and I think it's the Police using a bit of sensible judgement, far more useful than a flash from a camera.

100% as I was just a polite remember to watch the speed.

They probably got a sense that you only gave it a squirt for the overtake, not that you were proceeding at that speed, hence putting on the lights and giving you a warning.

If they were minded to do you, they would've done a follow check using road furniture or their in car camera, and then put the blues on to pull you over once they had determined you were carrying on at that speed.

I had similar this year on the motorway. Was caught briefly behind traffic in lane 3. When it cleared I was then enjoying my cars performance, when my spidey senses were triggered by a black X5 moving across from lane 1 in my mirrors. I backed off and moved to lane 2. Plod pulled alongside and did the slow down hand gesture, and then held a 'POLICE' sign up to the window (as if I couldn't tell by the uniform!).

I was stting it as I was going pretty quick when they turned on the blue lights. Really thought I was going to be pulled over. Was a bit awkward trying to acknowledge the message from Elise level up to the X5.

I can only assume they were not traffic Police and had better things to do, or I was lucky to react quickly.

Why didn't you give the Volvo a chance to overtake the slow vehicle before you overtook them both?

Read nothing more into it than the obvious. A clear example of why Traffic Police, in cars, patrolling the road, are infinitely more preferable than Speed Cameras and automated systems.

You were going too fast, they gave you a ticking off.

I've had a similar interaction from a car pulling alongside, officer in passenger gives it the 'slow down' sign language, I mouthed a 'sorry' and got a thumbs up back. Off they went on their way. I was a little more mindful of my speed. Job done.

It didn't look like it was going to so I did.

They then sat at 62ish going by my cruise control.

Yep much more preferable than a speed camera as to be honest it gives you a bit of a wake up to just keep a lid on it.

You were behind an unmarked police car for 20 miles and you didn't notice it was an unmarked car. Personally I'd have been running my checklist the second I clapped eyes on it.

Sounds like they were pretty cool to be honest, anything that doesn't result in points is a win in my eyes smile

They don't need a camera to prove you were speeding. The expert opinion of an officer that you were speeding and then corroborated by their speedometer will suffice

Well everyday is a school day.

Thankfully they were feeling generous.

I'd say you were lucky as presumably the road had a 60mph limit.

I got caught by a camera van at 86 on the M6 last year and got a Fixed Penalty. frown
