It occurred to me this last week or so that we are (slowly) seeing many of our liberties being slowly taken away or eroded. This isn't a "bash Labour" post but more of a reflection on what's happened over the past 5 years or so and where we may end up.

First, we were told that we needed vaccine's so that we could work, go on holiday, go out etc. The majority went along with it hoping they would be safe from COVID or for the greater good.

Digital ID has been mentioned, shelved, and has now reared its ugly head again. Who knows if that will ever happen.

We've been told what we can and can't (or at least should and shouldn't) drive. We have been told what we can and can't view on the internet.

Now we're told that trial by jury will be scrapped for all but the most serious crimes.

Local elections which should have taken place next year have been postponed until 2028.

When will this end? Will we ever see a day when a political party in power reverses all of this, or will they all simply carry on with what the last party implemented.

Personally, all of the above worry me, not really for my own sake but for the sake of my very young daughter who will grow up thinking all of the above is completely normal, having never experienced what life was like without these things happening.

There is a bit of me that thinks this is all a bit 'boiling a frog'.

The rational side of me thinks that this is a sequence of unconnected policies brought in by incompetent governments trying to do something to control the excess' in society. I don't credit them with the competence to do this as part of a co-ordinated plan whilst simultaneously feigning the incompetence to make us think this not that.

Not wishing to cause the OP any more anxiety, but to the list should I add the government proposals to install facial recognition systems across the nation. Add in that not only will the system search criminal records but the entire UK passport records. 45 million photos apparently.

Personally uneasy, not because of doing anything dodgy, but no doubt it will encourage even more scrotes to go round masked and sporting balaclavas.

We can't stop them taxing us or making things more difficult, all we can do is keep trying to make things easy for ourselves. Insulate ourselves from their grubby little grabs. That's my view, head down, crack on, not be distracted. We're still in control of our own destinies. For now.

Covid jabs have nothing to do with any current liberties..that was in the past and has gone away, it’s like saying that rationing during the war is eroding our liberties.

Media feeds will continue to feed your worries as they are tracking what you read. You will find what you seek and it makes for a very unhappy country right now.

How is having or not having a Covid jab affecting your civil liberties now?
Whether you think it was good or bad, it was temporary and didn't usher in some sort of governmental medical-based control. Same as wartime rationing didn't usher in a lifetime of governmental food control.

And carry on enjoying life.

I think the issue is that western civilisation has lost genuine stuff to worry about, so we now need to create imaginary monsters.

This isn't another version of the "If youve got nothing to hide" argument but I genuinely couldn't care less that my movements are probably being tracked and that I'm probably being recorded multiple times every day by CCTV.

When i ask the question "so what?" I tend to get weird hypothetical scenarios where somebody has altered my data to make it look like I'm in Syria with an "I heart ISIS" tshirt on.

I was thinking about it this morning, from the outside you could look at the U.K. and think it's turning into a dictatorship

Cancelling elections
Removing jury trials
Introducing mandatory ID cards
Rolling out National surveillance on the public
Draconian free speech restrictions

I do think democracy is under threat

I was being flippant in these dark times.

but I agree with you. Very sound advice, you've no doubt followed over your over average 130 posts a month on a forum over 16 years. You must be very active on the pistonheads mobile app!

In hindsight, I think the lockdowns and the public adherence to them are quite worrying. At the time I thought there was little or no risk to me but I went along with it, including the face mask in the supermarket thing, mainly due to a wish to blend in. It was one of those things which was easier to do than not do. I'm sure the general unquestioning obedience of the public will have been noted and discussed at length in Government, with a view to future "events"
