HWA Evo laps the Nordschleife... 504 times

Intense testing regime continues, with thousands of Nordschleife miles in a fortnight

HWA certainly couldn’t be accused of any half measures in the development of the Evo. Old habits die hard when your origins are in motorsport, presumably. Now, with first deliveries expected in the new year and an Evo set to compete at the 2026 running of the Nurburgring 24-Hour, the Evo has completed its Nordschleife testing programme.

Obviously it isn’t a new thing for a car, especially something so driver-focused, to be signed off at the ‘ring, but HWA’s efforts for a 100-unit car look remarkable. Over the course of 16 days, officially to work on damper tuning and ‘detailed setup calibration’, three Evo prototypes drove 504 laps - covering 6,523 miles.

They weren’t just getting through the miles, either, with racers Reinhold Renger, Markus Winkelhock, Luca Ludwig and Sebastian Asch (some famous families in there!) pushing the HWA to its limit throughout. If it can survive an autumnal Nordschleife pasting from actual paid professionals, a private track day in the sunshine ought to be a breeze.

Gordian von Schöning, CTO of HWA. “In addition to our hot and cold testing in Northern Europe and Southern Spain, as well as the ongoing homologation process, this phase of Nürburgring development allowed us to ensure we are creating a car worthy of bearing the HWA name.” That process is almost said to be finished, after what’s felt like an eternity, but such is the waiting game when standards are set so high. Production should kick off early in 2026…

How boring!

Imagine being asked to complete 500 laps of the best circuit in the world in a bespoke, track-focused version of a iconic car. Must have been really dull.

Oh, wait...

I'd love to know the lap times for them.

I imagine it would be pretty impressive!

I'm sure it's a fantastic drive but of little relation to the original. On that basis, I'll take an original and save half mil of my imaginary car fund.

If it's for testing then it can be really boring as you'll be asked to stick close to a specific time/speed to enable the engineers to have consistent test data.

I don't think I could manage more than about 2 steady, consistent without wanting to play!

I shared the track with them, for a few laps. It’s a cool car… if I was stinking rich I would!

I always wanted a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO and thought, with its in-line four, it was a better canvas than a Subaru STI/WRX. I hope HWA does well with their interpretation.

Looks like a dog's breakfast.
A pastiche of the original classic.
By all means build restomods, but don't add LED lights, blacked-out grilles, etc.

I think they look cracking, blacked out bits and LEDs included...it's a restoMOD, not a restoration after all smile

This one's definitely more 'mod'. Seems to have little connection to the original.

What's your opinion on Kimera's creations?

I'm of the opinion restomods should take the spirt of the original car and evolve it with as much modern know how as possible...the silhouette looks close enough to the original to meet that criteria; it's clearly a 190E that has been turned into a race car, which is essentially what the original was smile

One of the few that have come out really well. (All just opinion, of course - I'm sure there are those who hate them.)

I see your point; I just hate LEDs on an 'old' car.

I like it, but I think you're right about the LEDs, carbon grille etc. If it were my money, I'd spec it to look more like the original:

They should have kept the asymmetric OG outside rearview mirrors.

I'm not afraid to admit that doing one lap of the ring leaves me utterly frazzled!
