Our David Lloyd membership has just gone from £300 to £482, due to an annual increase and a child turning eighteen.

I took off my eldest child when they went to uni, to save money. It would otherwise be around £650 I think.

It is too much; I've given them notice. It especially doesn't seem like value when the place is now overrun with oiks who don't know how to behave, share space or use a toilet.

However, perhaps I am out of touch and that is all quite reasonable.

It's a Midlands-based club.

Any comparisons?

I train at home. Most of the big spends are done and accounted for, but we still add new bits here and there. Probably a few hundred a year.

Our family swim/spa membership though is over £2k pa. Terrible VFM to be honest, and won't be renewing.

I've never been in one, but AIUI David Lloyd offer a bit more in addition to the gym, like sports courts, sauna, steam etc. right?

Indeed for 480 I'd want someone lifting the weights for me.

Depends. It's tiered so using the tennis club was quoted as an extra £50pm on top of the £120pm. The weights bit was impressive, mind; lots and lots of plates and proper plate lifting kit/machines, and many stations, not just the usual cable-based weight machines you see in budget gyms (but they also had plenty of cable-based machines for the mummies of overworked execs).

That would definitely put me off. If I'm paying over £150pm I'd expect it to be a nice place to attend and otherwise I might as well just attend the usual big name brands charging £50pm.

I use a local town council gym thats 35 quid.

No spa facilities other than a water fountain a lack of eye candy and it's cramped but it's fine for me.

£482 a month for the gym? Christ, that's almost as much as my mortgage.

My GM is a member of David Lloyd, he's doesn't pay anything like what's been quoted by the OP as he's on a friend's and family deal from a few years ago when his nephew worked there, however it's still circa £150 pm, come the school holidays all he does is moan about the amount of kids there.

He's a bit of a show off, he does like to tell people he's a member of David Lloyd.

I thought my £77 at the local Bannatynes was a lot! I justify it by the gym being conveniently located, and it's mostly lovely & quiet, with well maintained equipment and generally good people there, both staff and clientele.

I think mine is £60 per month. I only think that reasonable because it has a 25m pool. If it was just a gym I'd want to pay half that.
