The Car SOS Vauxhall Astra GTE is for sale

A hot hatch hero in its own right, with 15 minutes of TV fame to its name as well

While all the hot hatch heroes of the '80s, by their nature as old, once affordable performance cars, are rare machines in the mid-2020s, some are true lesser spotted gems. Because they were so loved in period, a 205, Golf or Escort with a bodykit and a performance boost is reasonably common in classic car circles. But a Citroen Visa, Fiat Strada or Vauxhall Astra is much more seldom spotted; less loved in period not only meant fewer sold, it meant the affection and commitment for the cars wasn’t there later on, certainly not to the same degree as some of the others.

So they fell by the wayside. Parts supply probably wasn’t as good as the more popular cars, and with values on the floor the incentive wouldn’t have been there to seek parts out for a restoration. You’d have to really love something to spend more than it’s worth on a rejuvenation, even one that was a bonafide PH Hero. Such was the case with this Astra 1.8 GTE, which had been left in a bit of a sorry state; it had sat for two decades, in fact. Once upon a time insuring one of these can’t have been easy either, come to think of it, so better just to keep a GTE off the road.

Fortunately, though, the CarSOS team had other ideas, and this very Astra was featured on the show back in 2016. You can still see bits of the episode on YouTube, where the engine was rebuilt, rust worked on and new hubcaps 3D-printed. A lot of time, effort and skill evidently went into bringing the Astra back to its best, which is great to see - the world is a better place for GTEs on the road.

Since then, the Vauxhall has been with another collector, who’s said to have gone even further on the restorative work, and now the time has come to move it on once more. In truth, seeing any Astra GTE these days, a car now sufficiently mature to no longer require an MOT, is a real treat - and the black must make it extremely rare.

Both interior and exterior condition look very good indeed, and there’s nothing to report under the bonnet. The front ride height looks a little low, though in the grand scheme of classic car problems that seems a pretty minor one. The advert suggests it now needs ‘absolutely nothing’ and can in fact ‘be considered truly perfect.’ Which is quite the claim.

What will you pay for the privilege of owning a perfect GTE? £20k for this one at the moment, or right up at the sort of money that would buy a good Golf GTI, 205 1.9 or Escort RS Turbo. But for those whose misspent youth was dominated by the Griffin, obviously none of those are going to pass muster. An Astra GTE at this sort of money will take the most dedicated of hot Vaux collectors to take on, but we all know they’re out there. And what a way to make the usual suspects look common at next year’s classic car shows.

Return the ride height to factory standard and immediately add another five grand to the price. Originality is king on this sort of thing so why completely fk it up with such an obviously aftermarket attribute? What else has been ruined?

A droopy front
1.8 grunt
Rozzers to hunt
A car park dunt
The Astra GTE is familiar with these
But the astral plane for me is metal of cheese
My attraction to old cars, you see
Is to those which lived life by the sea
I like metal that's no longer magnetic
It's welding makes me energetic
My business card: 'Expert Coach Builder'
Her indoors says "amateur welder"
This black Vauxhall's good condition
Makes it little of an imposition
It's purchase I will gladly reject
I'm looking for my next failed project.

I can remember trying to persuade my dad to buy one of these when I was about 10. He was more of a Manta man though, and I wasn’t successful. Something so much better looking about it than an XR3.

Lordy, who took the jam out of your donut?

Just because it's been lowered, doesn't mean anything has been "ruined".

Excellent! What was keeping you up at 6am writing prose to rusty old Vauxhalls??

Like the Astra as well. My 2nd car was a black Nova SR so I’m always going to have a soft spot for Vauxhalls of this era. Shame they got progressively worse as they slid into the 90’s and beyond.

I had a red one of these back in the 1980’s. It was my first “fast” car.
I loved it. I had it for a few years until rust started to eat through the front
Wings were water got caught under the factory body kit.

I stupidly sold it for the new GTE. That was nothing like as good.

I've always wanted one too. A friend had a 1.3 as his first car and to 17 year old me that seemed peppy enough.

Not sure it was peak Vauxhall though - the 2.0 16v engine in the MK2 was an absolute cracker (to my eyes the MK1 is the best looking of them though)

This looks really nice - a set of springs and I’d leave it at that. Nice to see one in non white too.

With you re the Mk2 16valve engine - it was a stormer - much better than the 8v Mk2 car thanks to the suspension and chassis changes - and with the optional tyre set up they really were a great B road car. Could stick with the best French stuff and so much nicer on the motorway.

Calm down, it’s a set of springs, probably £200 and two hours to change.

Looks like it’s been nicely restored. I’m left wondering if the low front (not back) might be a parts supply issue. Presumably original springs are no longer available. Maybe during the restoration they were forced into using springs from something else. Given time and some skills, it might be possible to locate aftermarket springs and shocks that fit it better.

It's funny; Vauxhalls have gone from most hated to most loved and back to most hated in my lifetime!

Yes, the Astra A/Kadett D was probably peak.

Agreed. A simple quick fix would make a huge difference (in aesthetics, not value) smile

I generally disdain 'pwettry' as they pronounce it on Radio 4, but did enjoy that.

Johnny Clarke was great, too!

I think they sorted out the B/E version later on, but I remember thinking, "Vauxhall, WTF have you just done..?"

Like the Rover R8, it seemed as if its life was ended prematurely, just after they'd finally got something right.

Most likely - there will be some around somewhere.

Probably at the time of restoration they couldn’t get any in time for the handover
