2016 Panamera GTS to something more economical? £25k
Discussion
I have a 2016 Panamera GTS. Not a sports car by any stretch, but what an amazing 4 door car. I love it and would keep it, but the only problem is the fuel economy, which is ruinous.
My use case is either a daily 18 miles from central London to Chiswick, or 30 miles from north London to Chiswick. The car returns between 16 - 20 MPG at best really.
I've had great time with it, but as I'm more likely to be doing the 30 miles a day now, I have to consider the cost of fuel.
What can I get that won't feel like a huge downgrade from the Panamera?
The luxury and interior quality is more important than the performance element - it's seeing 20 MPH speed limits, and the occassional 40 MPH.
Happy to consider anything: petrol, diesel (assuming the journey doesn't case issues with the DPF), hybrid or electric. Any body shape is fine too. This is a car that is really just for the commute and for the family.
£25,000 max.

I would suggest a Tesla Model S Performance. This is probably the only luxury EV that’s in your price range that’s not compromised , but the build quality is first gen Tesla and definitely up to Porsche territory, however I would definitely consider just sitting in one and taking for a drive, you never know, you may think it is great. Underneath, its an exceptional bit of engineering. And does 0-60 in 2.3 sec! For £23k this is a bargain.

More traditional options
BMW 840d
Slightly over budget but could be haggled down to pretty close. If you wanted to remap it power would be very very strong.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

BMW 745e , if you can plug in at home with a 32mile range this could cut your running costs massively:

If you like the Porsche just get a Taycan.
Everyone keeps telling me EVs depreciate horrifically compared to ICE cars and are worthless at 10 years due to batteries.
As the oldest Taycan's are 6 years old then they must be dirt cheap.
In seriousness it might be worth doing some man maths on the savings in running costs and adding them the budget.

A good Taycan is about £40k, I know this because I’m currently in the process of buying one.Everyone keeps telling me EVs depreciate horrifically compared to ICE cars and are worthless at 10 years due to batteries.

You NEED one with the Performance Plus battery, also the pick of the range is the 4S if you can’t get a GTS.
They also come with nothing as standard so be prepared to look out for one with a hefty options list: folding mirrors, lumbar support, heated seats, ACC, keyless entry are all options on early cars. RWD cars don’t have air suspension
Ideal spec would be all of the above + panoramic roof, rear axle steering, Bose audio, smooth finish leather and 14 way seats. Then they’re around £43k

L405 Range Rover?
A car that makes at least as much sense in a London traffic jam as it does anywhere else.
Not sure if it is less ruinous to run than a Panamera , if you wanted to keep running costs down you should get the P400e but I think they’re still above £25k for a good specA car that makes at least as much sense in a London traffic jam as it does anywhere else.

30 miles every day would be around £3500 pa on nom unleaded fuel. If fuel economy doubles in your new car you save £1750 pa.
Cost spread of trading your car in and buying something of similar retail value might be £5k, so you break even in around 3 years. If you buy a newer car it may depreciate faster than your current one also.
Specifics numbers may vary but I’d advise you do this sort of calculation so you know where you stand.

Why not get an e-hybrid Panamera of the same age?

ETA saves about £700 per year in car tax plus maybe cheaper parking permit if applicable. If you use the pure electric range it will be in the region of 30-40mpg in London if you're paying to charge at lampposts etc, or way better 'mpg' than that if you can charge at work or home.

Mercedes EQC. I ve had one for 2 years now and have just been offered an extension to the lease, which I m taking. Super comfortable ride, lovely interior, plenty of physical buttons, and over 400bhp so no slouch.
Pennies to run if you can charge at home. Not the best efficiency as far as EV s go, but around £18 per month for 700 miles is cheap enough for me. If you have an EV tariff, your 30 mile commute will cost under £1.

If you like the car keeping it is a no brainer really. The cheapest car to run is the one you currently own most of the time. Of course if you just want a change nothing wrong with that but if you are doing it to change money id make sure your figures work or you will regret getting rid of a car you really liked for not much/ any benefit.Cost spread of trading your car in and buying something of similar retail value might be £5k, so you break even in around 3 years.
