About 4-6 weeks ago my car was making a slight whirring sound, mainly in low gear. I thought I would ask my mechanic to listen to it. He took it for a drive and as soon as he heard it he said its the gearbox. I said is there anything that can be done he said no needs replacing. He said could last weeks or years. Its a 2007 honda jazz.

The noise recently has got louder, it is doing it in neutral now too, however it stops when the clutch is pressed.

I've been panicking that I could suddenly break down and I do a lot of driving as I do deliveries. I've been reading up a bit about gearbox whirring noise and some people said it could be a number if things, so now I am starting to think it could be something that could be repaired? Is it worth getting a second opinion? Just to add i had my clutch replaced recently. Was the mechanic right i just have to wait for it to give up entirely?

Noises are difficult but sounds like input shaft bearing to me. A decent gearbox specialist could recon the box relatively cheaply & quickly. Sounds like your mechanic can't or won't do it. Some idea of where you live and we could suggest possible suppliers.

Sounds like a clutch release bearing to me.

You need to ask if they did a full clutch kit change or not, as they should have replaced the release bearing.

Gut feeling from what you have said to-date. Take it somewhere else.

Yeah I think I will take it somewhere else. Am I risk of breaking down?

We're always at risk of breaking down. But nasty noises are no helpful.

I haven't got round to getting a second opinion and the noise is louder now. Someone said to me has the transmission fluid been checked. Could that improve the situation and how much would it generally cost?

There are other garages in the area that have a good reputation or should I just search for a gearbox specialist in my area?
