'Aussie Shred' Gymkhana lives up to Brataroo

From Sydney Harbour to Bathurst (with a couple of shoeys for good measure), here's a Gymkhana not to miss

All the ingredients were there for the ‘Aussie Shred’ Gymkhana to be something very special indeed. We knew Travis Pastrana would be driving, and he most definitely knows the score when it comes to behind-the-wheel insanity. We knew it would feature the Subaru ‘Brataroo’, a 9,500rpm retro pick up built by the same folk who make STI rally cars. Moreover, it was going to be in Australia. And when has Australia ever looked anything but extraordinary?

So here we have it, the latest and perhaps greatest Gymkhana yet. Apparently this one features the ‘biggest jumps, closest calls and craziest tricks’ yet seen in one of these videos, which feels like quite a bold claim, but then look at these stills: the Subaru is jumping across a canyon, for heaven’s sake. There’s plenty more to enjoy besides, including cameos from actual V8 Supercars at Mount Panorama, BMX stunts and the stunning red sands of the Outback. Granted, by now it can probably feel like you’ve seen all that Gymkhana can offer, but Aussie Shred certainly promises something different.

It’s been a long time coming, too. As far back as Gymkhana Nine, the Hoonigan crew wanted to shoot in Australia, but were rebuffed because of the country’s strict driving laws. Now, a decade later, they were met “with open arms” by the Aussie government, according to Hoonigan co-founder Brian Scotto.

“This combination of the unfinished business we had down under and this being Pastrana’s last film in the series not only makes it very special to me, but also puts the pressure on to push the limits of what we could do both in the car and behind the camera.” And when the actual Hoonigan folk are talking about pushing the limits, you know you’re in for one heck of a ride. Put the kettle on, get comfy, and be ready to see Australia like you’ve never seen it before.

So... lets see what exciting stuff is on the Subaru UK web site for anyone interested by this video...

"Experience the outstanding safety, capability and reliability offered by Subaru.".

Nada.

Does make you wonder why Subaru fund (partially) this when there's sweet FA to be excited by in the range, so it can't trabslate to sales - unless there is elsewhere of course. (Years since I've been in the back of a Brat!).

Not normally a fan of such things, but that was fun.

I spent some time in Sydney in 2006 / 7, and I suspect the presence of a Brat rotating in its own length would have raised a few eyebrows among the cruise ship passengers of Circular Quay.

Why would Subaru UK post something, this is a collaboration between Vermont and Subaru Rally in USA.

Yum, 670hp and a sequential box, if only it were housed in an Impreza and I could pop down to my local Subaru dealership for a test drive smile

Wonderful.

I don't know how you can watch that and not grin.

Travis just being Travis. What a great way to keep Kens legacy alive.

the skills are impressive, but i'd be more impressed if those videos ticked at least one of those boxes

[ ] use an actual unmodified street car, instead of something that was custom-built only for drifting
[ ] use a RWD instead of an AWD car
[ ] refrain from using the handbrake, cmon this is just lame

Chill, it's entertainment, name a single unmodified car that could have been used for any part of that, or any Hoonigan video?

Its funny, I felt the Block ones got a bit samey. So I stopped watching them

So far the Pastrana ones have a different vibe which I enjoy more.

The previous one with the Huckster in Florida was brilliant.

Probably cause just the opening 30seconds shows how much of a loon TP is! laugh

The way it went across the water was like it was 2" deep .... but then the Legacy proved it was a bit deeper than that

roflYeah, lots of standard cars would be able to deal with those jumps and the grinds. AWD is loads of fun with lots of power and a rear bias.

Yup, but you write that as if Subaru Rally in USA have anything more interesting.
Barely.

Yes, the open class WRX is definitely boring with its 320bhp/280lb-ft, big aero, bespoke suspension and sequential gearbox laugh

The new entry-level WRX ARA25L, with 315bhp/460lb-ft is also painfully dull...

As for Project Midnight, what were they thinking? Second fastest up the hill at Goodwood this year, how boring...

The new WRX road car might not be peak Subaru, but I'd still rather it was sold in the UK than not.
