I recent advertised a boot rack for a Jag F-type roadster. Got a message from a guy in France saying he is interested. After exchanging several messages and emails, he tells me he wants to pay by cheque and will pay more than the agreed amount to cover collection by his nominated courier.

Several weeks later the cheque arrives (appears to be a bank draft). He agreed that nothing will happen until the funds are cleared into my account.
Here is the interesting bit. We agreed a deal at £180 plus courier charges. The bank draft is for 2000 eu. ??

He is for sure going to ask me to refund the unspent funds. I am trying to spot the sting.. What do you think?

The bank draft is a fake but it takes a few days for the bank to spot this and in the meantime you've sent him the money.

Cash it anyway but send him a rack for a toy F-type.
Or an old, used oven rack.

Actually, scratch that as it won't be his address anyway. Burn is the better option.

I think it smells too much, but I will attempt to cash it and if it clears will withdraw the funds.

It's a scam as old as the hills. Tear it up and block him.

The cheque will be fraudulent, he'll ask you to send him the difference due to his 'error' and have your cash and you have nothing.

Particularly prevalent in France. I used to sell stuff on French FB marketplace and you'd get these chancers all the time. shoot

All they'll do is debit your account when it fails to clear, you won't gain anything, other than perhaps being charged a fee for a non-sterling transaction.

Are they still doing this?

Well, drag it out for as long as possible because otherwise they'll spend their time scamming someone else who isn't aware of the refund fake draft scam.

Action Fraud – Report a Scam
https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting-fraud-...

You will be guided through a form where you’ll enter:
• what happened
• dates and amounts
• copies/photos of the cheque or envelope
• messages/emails you received
• the buyer’s name, email, phone number, and any addresses given

At the end you’ll get a crime reference number.

Its best not to engage at all with scammers, in case you give them some information which they can use for another scam.

You're right. I wouldn't do it because I don't have the mental power but I've seen others do it.

Seriously OP, how could you have even contemplated that any of this could be genuine?
