The kids are getting a ps5 for Xmas.

I've never had a playstation before, always Xbox.

What do I need to know, plan is to set it up tomorrow night to let it do updates etc.

Are there any watch outs when setting it up in terms of if you put dates of births in can it restrict chat or access to things or is that all changed set?

Also do I need any sort of subscription to allow online play?

He wants FIFA and Fortnite and I'll likely play battlefield.

Any other hints and tips??

You will need a subscription for online play, set up an account as you then child accounts for the kids for the restrictions etc. double check if that allows them to play on your subscription I can’t recall if it does offhand

It should update its own software when it connects to the internet, then install each game and they should also install updates.

PSN or whatever the current name is, is required for lots of online games. However it can unlock access to quite a few games depending on tier.

The controllers have updates too. It doesn't take long to update but you may as well plug them both in if you have more than one.

There seems to be a fair bit of talk about child and adult accounts, it may be worth looking into options before settling on one or another.

Thanks all so from a bit of googling it looks like setting up a main parent account and then adding kids accounts under that is the main way.

What issues are there with this?

They can’t play age restricted games on the kids accounts.

Hmm that's not a problem at the moment as he's 9. But I assume when he's 16 he might want to play GTA if it's out by then.

Is it possible to override that via the settings or is it a done deal based on DOB?

I believe child accounts are locked down, so if you let them play the current gta at 16 but the game is an 18 then the playstation will say no.

Not sure how purchasing games works if you split the accounts at 18.

That link explains some of the details directly.

This one is more about parental controls.
