Hello,
Missus and I going to Gambia end of Feb. I had my last Yellow Fever vaccination in 2015 upon entering Ghana and have a record of this in my vaccination book. I have read that the WHO in 2016 have deemed any Yellow Fever vaccination regardless of expiry date in a vaccination record to be lifelong. My GP is telling me to have a fresh shot for YF regardless........help, who is right here? I also believe that YF vacs for Gambia are not mandatory......
Any advice much appreciated.

Do you have any issue with having a second jab? If not, you may as well have one and be done with it.

A YF shot for Gambia is mandatory but if you have proof of one you will be fine as they are a once only requirement. Not quite sure what your GP is going on about. I am not a GP but have travelled and lived extensively in Africa.

I take it that your vaccination record shows an ‘exporation date’ for the YF jab and is the cause of your concern?

Well fear not as no one will check it and if they do they know that it doesn’t expire.

If you are worried about potential exposure then again fear not as it is lifelong. You can get it if you wish after 10yrs, if travelling to a high risk location or else have a weak immune system.

I’ve had 2, 15yrs apart and only then as it was easier to get a second jab than it was a duplicate certificate

It used to be valid for 10 years - I think I've had 3 or 4 since the 80s, however, when we had one for visiting Uganda in 2019 we were told (by Boots) that they are now lifelong. I'd lost my little yellow book a long time, so just had another.
