Reality is that the old boxer was an aran jumper and werthers kind of IAM bike. Completely outclassed by the opposition. I have memories in the late 1980’s following the BMW boys down Town Hill outside Pietermaritzburg, watching the boxer stuff flex so badly they ended up in the ditch while the NS was so stable I could do long division in my head. Dreadful things.
The K series was a brave attempt to modernise. It had its issues. That said, the K1 was an unmitigated turd in a shell suit bought by the very few deluded types who thought it could match an FZR or GSXR….
BMW modernised massively into a brand making desirable bikes although a question mark remains over quality. But the1970’s stuff was just dreadful ste.

I thought they were meant to be plodding reliable bikes hence why the police ended up with them?tbox that nearly brought BMW down until they released the K series There was a bike dealers in March Cambridgeshire who bought the old police bikes and he said they would come in with 60,000 miles on them and just need a set of piston rings and was good to go again.
I never liked them as they wasn’t really what us lot wanted. We either went Jap or British

When the R100RS was introduced in 1976, it was the first production bike with a full touring fairing (unless you count the limited number of Royal Enfield Airflow models produced c. 1960). It was a radical, unique, fast tourer.
Helmut Dahne and Hans-Otto Butenuth were fastest in the 1976 Production TT on a BMW R90S. Quicker than Laverdas, Guzzis, Ducatis, Kawasakis, and Hondas
Reg Pridmore won the inaugural AMA Superbike Championship in 1976 on a BMW R90S. The first Japanese bike was a Kawasaki in 6th place
