Samsung are not satisfied with just launching a Flip and Fold smartphone.

They have now launched a Tri-Fold smartphone!

I know it might be a gimmick and not for everyone but at least Samsung are still innovating within the smartphone market unlike Apple.

Quite clever to have a smartphone which opens up to being a tablet.

What does everyone think?
Posted this in the Samsung Galaxy fold thread.

I applaud the innovation that Samsung are still working on, whilst the majority of smartphone companies are just standing still with incremental updates to cameras, batteries, etc

This is the form factor I've been waiting for.

Weight and bulk look a bit fearsome, but I'd like to feel that for myself before deciding.

I wonder how durable and reliable it'll be.

I had the Fold 3 and now have the 6. This seems about the same size of the 6 but apparently weighs more but when it's in my jeans pocket etc. weight is not really and issue and my Fold 6 is already too heavy for lightweight summer shorts.

Based on the quality of Fold phones I can see this being robust but you'd still want to be careful with it.

I'm pretty sure my Fold 6 was about £1800 but they are saying the Tri fold could be around this price too.

I know I'm not the first person to point this out, but, here goes: it's a bi-fold, not a tri-fold.

And im also sure Samsung know that as well. Which makes me wonder why they have called it a tri-fold?

Because bi-fold has already been taken! Try searching for one then the other….

I tried that as you suggested, and all I could find were incorrectly named things that fold in half, like a bi-fold wallet for example, which clearly has a single fold.

What happens when you search for tri fold?

I've alerted Samsung.

They're scrapping all of them.

Check back in a year or two when there's a new name.

But surly the appeal of such a flexible and expensive device is been able to use is any where, beach, office, commuting, walking etc.

I suspect it'll die within an hour if you took in on holiday and went near a beach. I had 2 Folds and an Honour Magic die on me now I suspect because I use them like a normal slab phone, take them on family holidays, hand them out to kids to keep them entertained when needed. They were all repaired under warranty but I have as much faith in these things lasting more than 12 months as any F1 team has of wining a world championship with Lance Stroll as their lead driver.

The Google Pixel Fold I believe actually has dust protection, so who knows, we might be getting close to seeing hinge designs that can survive actually daily use versus lab environments.

One of the endless tech youtubers managed to leave deep scratches in the big screen within a few minutes.

I assume you'd have to aggressively baby it, but if it's costing multiple thousands I'd expect some fortitude.

Presumably this will be solved in future generations. Sounds a bit alarming for now.

I think that was the screen protector and how he managed to do that was a bit dubious. He said he leant it on a plant pot to take a photo but on screen protector i have ever seen would do that.

You can't launch it around like a slab phone in the same way, if you do that you will damage it but I have had Folds for 5 yrs, without cover and never damaged them and still taken them everywhere.

I have been using the Huawei Mate XT for almost a year now, and to me the Samsung has a flaw.

When you open it you can either use 1 screen, or all 3, but not too which is a really good form factor to use when you don't want to watch full videos etc.

With the Huawei you can have all options.

But it's obviously popular, it sold out in Korea in minutes!

Samsung have announced today that the Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold has been discontinued after just 3 months of release.

I guess not enough people were willing to spend $2,900 on this to make it feasible.

One article said they cited high production costs.

Huawei are on their second generation. I wonder whether they'll re enter or leave it to someone else in future.

Shame, but I'd want an iteration that had had plenty of wrinkles worked out of it first.

Yes, probably back to the drawing board for them to try and get more durability and cost effective production in order for this to work.

Samsung haven't given up on Fold/Flip smartphones yet as they are working on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 "Wide" alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 regular edition. Also the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and 8 FE are due out in July 2026.

Ouch, was it THAT much? No wonder. Shame, I really fancied one

I heard, from someone who should know but there's no way to verify it, that Samsung's display peeps are absolutely flat out.

They have the regular Samsung folds, the new wide one, the Google ones, and now Apple have ordered a bazilion units for their new device. So the tri-folds, which are a bit of an experiment, don't justify the capacity they take up.

He also opined that Samsung will likely expand capacity if the Apple device is successful, and that should allow a Mk 2 tri-fold to be made, but that's 2028 at best.

Today a customer at work was using his Tri-fold, I asked him about it, he said it was a fantastic but of kit and was very obliging when I asked for a hands on look. Must admit I was impressed with the build quality and heft of it, it felt like a really great quality bit of kit, the crease was pretty much invisible too.
