Jamie Olivers cooking thing!
Discussion
Did anyone see that Jamie Oliver program?
What a dense bunch of youfs!
Quote: "Oh, that's an oyster, I thought they were dangerous"
(only if someone throws one at you in the shell!)
No wonder they are unemployed if they can't even follow ten or so simple steps to cook a bit of fish!
Oh well, Keeps them off the streets I suppose.

Yes I thought it was funny. I suspect he thought he'd have a load of really keen foodie types but instead has ended up with a bunch who have as much food related talent as our springer spaniel. All the keen foodies having the gumption to get a job without resorting to talent contest based 'chef idol' type things. Very funny to see him lose it though.
I thought it was good telly, I wonder if the BBC are regretting not taking him up on the offer to do it?
D.

The Fat Tounged one's saddled himself with a bunch of feckless no hopers (they're unemployed for a reason Jamie....) who saw the chance for their 15 minutes of fame by being on the telly.
His romantic notion of picking up a few poor street urchins by the bootstraps and shaping them into a kitchen full of highly skilled chefs is disappearing quicker than the carving knives will once the scrotes get left on their own.
"So, what can you taste"
"Ermmmm...."
"So, you have a good sense of taste but you can't describe it very well, yes?"
"Erm, yeah, thats right...."

I think he had an overly romanticised idea of what would happen. His criteria for selction, "gumption", keenness, initiative, willingness to learn is not easily found in the unemployed youth of today, or any-day.
His real challenge will be getting their enthusiasm. If he get make them keen, and they get some small successes, then their confidence may increase and they may succeed.
Jamie himself has put alot of his own cash into it, and I'd rather see more so-called celebs doing worthwhile stuff like this rather than interviews for hello. Full credit to the lad and I hope it all works out, for all of them.

I'm with the other hippy - if he's genuine (Jamie's motive's that is, not whatevers reason for posting)
jmorgan casually observed: Worrying thing is if food doesn't come in a packet wif pizza or mc D on it they havn,t a clue what it is. Local super market check out operator had to ask me what was in the bag, broad beans I had to tell her. No name or instructions on raw ones see.
Too true! I bought some monkfish the other day, and the bird at the til went "urgh! mingin!!" - so I replied, "well I quite like it actually, was the taste a bit to strong for you?"
The reply, "nah, don't like it.... never tried it"

Agreed -- but perhaps all this girl needed was to be shown that handling the fish isn't going to make your hands go all scaly or slimy forever, then to be shown how properly to get the membrane off, then how to cook it, and perhaps what veg to go with.
Then, she'll have an insight into what makes you and I go out and buy monkfish. And maybe she would try it and like it.
And that, I think, is what JO is trying to achieve. He does, however, appear to have a rather large task on his hands...
The alarming thing is that most kids don't want to try new types of food unless it's involved in McDonnald's latest ad campaign.
Okay, so sometimes I would look at food and say
"Yuck, I'm not eating that"
I have never eaten any kind of live insect:
'bush tucker'.
When I was in the final year of school, our english teacher said that she was teaching the first-years and none of them knew what a green-grocer was/sold????.
That was about 6 years ago now, so I'm not supprised that some kids don't know what Vegetables are these days.
It's all wrong!!!!

The broad-beans thing takes some beating, but ask many people "where do sprouts come from?" as in, how do they grow, and you'll not often get a correct answer.
There's plenty of stories these days of kids who don't know milk comes from cows, for example. I used to find all this rather amusing but now it's just kind of saddening, really.
If it's not branded and pre-packaged and marketed and comes with a toy, then frankly no-ones interested. Slogans and marketing. No truth. Remind you of anything?
