Lexus RC F | PH Auction Block

Lexus is lining up a driver-focused coupe once more - time to revisit a brilliant past master

It’s been too long since the world has seen a Japanese super GT with a V8 in it, so there’s an awful lot riding on the new TGR GT. The world expects, basically. Indeed, so much is expected of it that the other very significant debut earlier this month, of the Lexus LFA concept, passed with much less fanfare. Partly that’ll be the LFA’s EV status, and partly because of just how much the GR brand is now loved. But if Lexus is feeling confident enough to resurrect the LFA badge, famously last used on one of the greatest supercars of the 21st century, then it must be cooking up something special. Certainly a pair of very intriguing cars, the GT and LFA.

However they turn out, though, both Toyota and Lexus will be expensive propositions. These are proper supercars, after all - a level above and beyond what we’ve seen from both brands in recent years. Which is exciting, no doubt, but for Lexus at least it would suggest a move away from the more attainable ‘F’ models for now. Fondly remembered models like the RC F, for example. Maybe a new generation of LFA will serve as the halo car for a new era of electrified F models, much as the V10 model did, but that would be some way off. Whereas the auction for this Lexus starts on Christmas day…

In some ways, the RC F was absolutely typical Lexus. The interior was a bit baffling but fantastically built, the reliability wasn’t really in any question, nor was the upmarket feel of the thing. The F apple didn’t fall far from the Lexus tree, or so it would seem. But on the other hand, the RC was as far from the Lexus norm as it was possible to imagine, powered by a snarling 5.0-litre V8, boasting sensational good looks and seemingly never happier than when driven sideways. The juxtaposition was appealing, because it could play both the cushy Lexus and rorty hot rod simultaneously.

Alright, so it wasn’t as sharp to drive as an M4, or as fast as an AMG. Anyone coming from an Audi would have needed a week to figure out the interior. All that, plus the badge, meant that the Lexus sold in fewer numbers than its rivals. Bad news for the potential future of the badge here, but great news for a prospective secondhand customer, because it means the RC F is rare, cool and interesting. You see M cars every day - a Lexus F spot is a proper occasion.

While there were tweaks and updates throughout the RC’s decade on sale, the fundamentals remained the same throughout; an earlier version like this 2017 car will be just as charismatic as those that followed in the years after. Once more, it was an issue for the F as a new car - rivals were updated, and it continued mostly unaltered - while making life simpler for the used buyer.

This one, even by RC F standards, looks ace, thanks to a black over red colourway and recent machine polish. It’s covered less than 40,000 miles since 2017, the MOT runs until June, and there are four new Michelins at each corner. It’s even still covered by a Lexus warranty until 2027, which is when we’ll see that GR GT for real. How many C63s do you reckon are still under manufacturer warranty almost a decade later? Exactly. While we eagerly await the return of Japanese V8 heroes, you could do a whole lot worse than enjoy one of the past masters. Just don’t forget about your other Christmas obligations on the 25th…

Looks a touch lowered to me.
And it’s technically out of warranty until it’s serviced again - last service was April 2024.
Still would…

Improved with age but I've always thought they looked a bit bulbous at the front. They do make a nice noise though and I'm tempted by the more practical ISF after I sell my current ST as they make a nice, left field alternative to an M3.

Wouldn't mind an LC500 though if we're talking Lexus, that's a proper looker...

Best car ive ever owned. And ive owned a few. The engine was absolutely peachy, definitely needed a slight exhaust upgrade and the sat nav could've done with the vline Android Auto/Apple Car play upgrade.

However the Mark Levinson sound system was an absolute joy to listen to. Their home amps are £5000-£20,000

I had a lot of people pulling up to me and smiling or saying I love your car. You just wouldn't get that with an M4 or RS5.
Someone in petrol station asked if it was the LFA which I thought was a bit crazy but funny.

Its definitely a car that looks better in person than photos, definitely best coupe for £25K in my opinion

One of my favourite engines with a lovely car wrapped around it.

I agree about the LC being more of a looker - but I’m biased there - but this one looks marvellous.

I had one when they first came out about 10 years ago, lovely car, great place to sit and do long journeys, nice sounding engine and a bit different to the usual German rivals.

The worse sat nav interface / controls.

As someone who changed his car every year the RCF changed my habit, I'm now in my 7th year of ownership and still like it, okay I've modified it a bit but it is still only £195 a year road tax and servicing to keep the 10 year warranty is relatively cheap. It's not the obvious choice but does have a charm of its own my Yaris GR runs circles around it but on a decent long journey it's very good. Just to add it's the 2017 cars that are the cheap road tax before that its about £700

Nice left-field choice rather than the usual Merc/BMW offerings…would still get an M4 though, can’t gel with the looks

That's a lie... People in the real world... Especially young people LOVE the M4 and RS5.... Especially the M4 way more than the Lexus as they don't even mostly know what it is... And dream to own an M4.

M4 is the young persons choice every time... Remap and downpipe warriors... With its aggressive power delivery. The choice of weapon for the street racers... It's what they know and love.

Do love your car tho...beer

You deffo had it on Autotrader for a long while though. I only know, as I was looking for one at the time. Glad you didn't succumb, get any takers. Especially in this EV day and age. Bit of a unicorn now...

Lovely cars, beautiful feel inside.

Wish it could have sounded better, very muted for a V8.

Very slow reacting gearbox.

People have said mine may have been faulty. I wouldn't have thought so at 16,000 miles, but maybe.

That’s a nice spec. Do you mean the gearbox is slow in all conditions or in manual mode?

In normal mode.

At 30mph if you floored it, the car seemed to slow for a moment, and took about 2 to 3 seconds to jump into life/acceleration.

A little better at higher speed.

I never tried manual changing.

Other RCF owners insisted mine was faulty, which I accept it could have been as I never tried another one.

Once on the power it changed ok up the box.

Other than that, a stunning car, and like someone's already said, lots of nice comments at petrol stations/car parks.

I took mine to the St Neots meet once, and everyone liked the looks, and the beautiful seats.

IMHO, four cars look their best in black: LC500, 599 GTB, R35 GT-R – and the RC-F.
Needless to say, RC-Fs look much better in the metal compared to pics.

I obviously love the engine in these, but I do imagine the gearbox to be a bit of a stumbling block though. I do like how rare they are though, and that is something that I like about my 370Z as well.

Great car, I wish I saw them more often. I've always viewed the RCF as a Japanese Mustang as opposed to an M4 rival.

Funny you should say that.

I went along to Junction 17 cars to buy a Mustang they had.

Saw the RCF in their showroom, and instantly knew I was having that instead.
