Transverse engine to inline - can it be done?
Discussion
The basic answer is that some of the early Mk3 Escort and early Fiesta engines were the crossflow from the Mk2 Escort. The castings for the main block over time were changed to suit the transverse mounting position but depending on the placement of the mounting points on the block most engines can be made to fit in line. A lot of it is down to good engineering of suitable mounts.
I recently checked out a 1600 diesel unit from a Mk3/4 Escort that someone was thinking of putting in their Jago (the engine is still for sale) and it did have the correct mounting points on the block (not being used in transverse mode) to allow it to fit in line.
If my memory serves me correctly on that one a 1600 OHC sierra bellhousing should match the back of the engine.
Check out the Jago Owners Club technical web site in case there is something on there.
