A bit of a vague thread but I'm looking for help, especially from people who have owned or have driven both the standard, non-'S' 4.7 and the 4.7 V8VS. I'm looking at 4-cat models not the early 2-cat (if they ever did 2-cat 4.7's).

The background is I like the quiet nature of my non-'S' exhaust when I'm just cruising, where the system closes the exhaust valves at UK motorway speeds. I also like the sound of the car with the valves open when it's playtime, and I have a CCCharger remote system so I can pin them open when I want. But now the actuation arms on both valves in my exhaust have failed (leaving one valve open with the flap waving in the breeze, the other stuck shut: the car sounds weird).

My MD wanted £3k plus fitting for a new backbox - thanks, but no thanks. I have the option of either replacing both the valves in my exhaust system or fitting a second-hand 'S' backbox for close-enough to similar money.

I believe the V8VS had a lighter backbox that was louder and more tuneful with the valves open, but I can't recall if the car sounded the same (especially in the cabin) when the valves were shut. So here's the request. For people who have driven both 4.7 'S' and non-'S', when cruising at motorway speeds (so the valves are closed), was there an appreciable increase in cabin exhaust noise in the 'S' over the non-'S'?

I'm not bothered about round town or country lane sprints, I just don't want to make my car more irritating by being noisier on long motorway or dual-carriageway drives because, tyre roar on some surfaces excepted, it's a pretty civilised place to spend time.

Surely the easiest/cheapest option is to get some new valves welded into your existing exhaust ? Think the valves are about £180 each from DAE and then its the labour cost of removal/welding/refitting.

This is true and is one of the two options under active consideration. But the 'S' box would enhance the sound when I'm not in "cruise" mode.

This is not something you would have to worry about, as your 4.3 (assuming your profile is up-to-date) is probably one of the better-sounding of all the VH Vantages

Yes, the 4.7 only has 2 cats (1 for each engine bank), from when most customer deliveries began in September 2008 up to some point in 2010, when legislation required manifold cats.

Surely when the exhaust valves are in the Open position, it does not matter which silencer/backbox is fitted?
My understanding is that when the valves are open, exhaust gas bypasses the silencer and is directed straight to the tailpipes.
Is that correct?

The S backbox is louder with the valves open throughout the rev range. I believe that it’s just as quiet with the valves closed as the normal one. It isn’t any lighter though - if this is important to you, you’d need to go down the modified v12v backbox route or the GT4 silencer route.

Whatever you end up doing, make sure the new backbox valves get a proper check over and replace them before fitting if there’s any him of them failing as it’s a fair bit of labour to get the backbox off and back on again.

I'm not sure - the drawing shown them going into the box and emerging at two different points, with the valves deciding the path.

I can't find a drawing or image of the 'S' box. I'm more concerned in the difference (if any) with the valves closed - I'd be happy if the difference is just with the valves open
