Started the Xmas food shopping today and to my horror I have found out that Haywards no longer make picallili…

Their Saucy version was staple eating for me over Christmas and now I’m looking for a’next best’…

I’m not a fan of the artisanal stuff- needs to have chunky veg, quite hot and saucy…

I bow before the PH collective- any suggestions welcome please!!

Thank you all in advance.

Isn’t there a branston version?

Yep, if I can get it here in Canada, you must be ok?

Branston make one which is nice.

I don't mean to damn it with faint praise. It's good but it's not Haywards.

ETA Too slow. But I bought it in the UK in Sterling.

The Waitrose one is quite good. As ever you can always stir in more English mustard but it’s definitely on the tangy side.

I bought the trackelments one recently and didn’t much like it. Was too thick and was more like a mustard mayo

Yes, some are really gooey and unappetising.

You can always make your own, it really isn’t that difficult. Plus you can balance your choose of veg and heat level.

Of all things pickles are pretty easy and tolerant to errors.

Thank you all for your counsel. Mrs P purchased some Branston picallili this afternoon- they actually do 3 types: sweet, original and spicy. She purchased original, which is ok, so I am secretly returning to Sainsbury’s tomorrow to buy some of the spicy. I will report back.

Thank you Vaud/ I did try making it a few years ago- the boiling vinegar and turmeric was quite pungent in the house and caused a bit of consternation so I’ve resolved to leave it to the professionals 😀

Just do it outside on a camping stove. But yes, can be pungent, but I like my choice of spices and being left alone for an hour or so.
Veg is quite cheap, but our local greengrocer (yes not supermarket) will give me slightly damaged stuff for free.
