Several programmes on TV lately ,celebrity reality programmes and celebrity versions of quizzes.
I haven't got a clue who 99.9% of these people are .
At what age do we lose touch with popular culture?
I'm 70 single ,live alone ,watch little popular TV and certainly don't listen to modern pop music .

I really don't do influencers or reality shows, so I am genuinely clueless on most of these "celebrities".
Actually I'm pretty clueless on real celebrities. I got chatting at a bar to a bloke I half recognised (thinking if was possibly a customer from work). Turned out he was a weatherman off the telly.

To me, a celebrity is someone like Sir Mick Jagger.
Some social media "influencer" to me, is not. Unfortunately the world that we now live in is inundated with social media people who seem to either claim or attain "celeb" status but they're just average Joe's to me.
I think I'm just getting more miserable as the years tick by; everyone gets up in the morning and puts their trousers on, so we're all the same. I met Becky Hill (according to my mates) on a ski slope a few years ago. She seemed like a totally average random female specimen to me but all the others were squealing with excitement about who it was. I couldn't give a stuff.

Celebrities aren't the celebrities they once were, such as the likes of Elizabeth Collins, Oliver Reed etc. I think only having 3 or 4 TV channels helped that, as everyone knew who they were. Nowadays the celebrity status is diluted with influencers and instant celeb wannabes. They say Tom Cruise is the last real movie star, and there aren't really that many others left in his league.

This is exactly it. Gaining recognition was much harder and you had to be much, much better at whatever it was you were doing compared to today.
Even true celebs these days aren't the same. I've long liked Sam Fender but it occurred to me when he was on the news the other week winning that award, that until then I hadn't the slightest idea what he looked like.
Well they’re hardly going to have dick van dyke or rod stuart or Elton John on these programs are they? They aren’t relevant in today’s society
Celebrities are a result of Morden culture, music, relality tv and social media
The celebrity traitors had some of the best known British people on it, Stephen fry, Alan Carr, Tom daily, Kate garaway, Claire balding, that’s a pretty good mix of people for all ages

Even sportsmen became household names.
Back in the 80's & 90's most households would be able to reel off a list of current famous boxers. Probably because boxing was shown on terrestrial TV, so they became known. Nowadays I hardly know any boxers names, not helped by the sport being behind a pay per view pay wall.
Snooker was the same, so many famous household names, less no nowadays.
Back in the day these sportsmen were characters, look at Jimmy White, Alex Higgins etc. Nowadays they lack character and seem bland, plus they all seem to play to the same very high standard so theres little difference between any of them.
