Before the paywall came down he’s still doing a spot of consulting…
I didn’t get far enough to see if he was worried about IHT…
Has to be a festive wind up by the Telegraph.

Wouldn't be the first time someone has spun a tale to this bit of the Telegraph just to generate a reaction.

The £1.12m is “just” the SIPP, They appear to have total assets exceeding £3m.

Their relatives might be somewhat disappointed at the size of the IHT bill

Frankly, if I have seven figures floating around at age 80, I'll be making significant investments in Cuban cigars and Blantons.

Blimey, my current plan is eek out savings then try to survive on State Pension from age 70.

1.2 million pension pot...... in my dreams.

If I were him at 80 I'd cash it in and have fun.

Personally I would have retired at 60 and enjoyed myself over the last 20 years. You are a long time dead.

My partners father is the same, he worked until 72 and had millions in pensions and property. He is now 76, doesn't spend a penny if he doesn't have to and drives a 15 year old battered up car.

Seriously what is the point in hoarding it all until you die.

This person is 80, what do they seriously think they need all that money for?

Maybe he's probably planning a fabulous, elaborate and expensive 90th birthday?

I’d have retired early too.

However people who’ve been frugal their entire life seem to struggle to switch to spend mode hence the keeping up the accumulating drive.

Everyone is different, some people enjoy their work. Not me, I retired at 54 and love the freedom.

Not enough money at 80 vs not enough time. Some people really got their priorities wrong !

I got a Telegraph sub for £25 because they do have some decent articles but also some batst ones.

I don't know if they run pieces like that to wind people up or if those are genuine "struggles" their readership think they face.

I often read letters/questions in the Money section where you just think "you've won enjoy your life".

One man s winning is another man s surviving. Nothing new there.

I think they clearly have not been able to switch into ‘retirement’ mode but that’s just how some people are. My dad still runs a business at 80.
