I have a hankering for a Mazda 3, but have always been an estate person. Back in the day I have many happy memories of haring off to Wales, Lakes and Scotland in a mate's mums 323 estate for hillwalking, paddling and cycling...

I think a Mazda 3 estate would be a brilliant thing...Comfortable, well made, handle well, and more room in the back seat and boot than the current hatch.

As ever, someone has already used AI/skillz to create a few mock ups:

So what variant of a model do you want to see back?

3 doors estates.

(I assume they were only viable when there were van versions of normal cars, whereas now small vans are much taller (eg. Transit Connect, Berlingo, etc))

"normal" 6 cylinder engined cars - like back in the day when you could get a range of, say, BMWs x20i-x28i/30i and all would be 6 cylinder. You didn't have to buy a halo model to have a multicylinder engine

You can still get a "van" based on an estate car - the Toyota Corolla Commercial. My local council seem to have loads of them. Toyota didn't make a 3 door estate though....

The car I'd like to see back are cars with 6 seats in two rows of three, and estate cars with those fold up backwards facing seats in the boot floor. Both would be useful to have to be able transport Grandma and Grandad as well as the family all in one car on local trips. Much better than having to buy some massive SUV or van derived MPV instead of a normal sized car just to get one extra seat which isn't used that much.

Crash regs put and end to a lot of rear facing and boot mounted seats.
What I do not get though is how many 7 seaters or even super small cars like an Aygo where the rearmost head is almost against the glass or rear boot top....

But yes, a renewed modest size people carrier would be great.

I was surprised to learn that the S212 Mercedes E Class (2009-2014 for the pre facelift) was still available with rear facing boot seats!

I did a lot of research into this when I worked in the industry - absolutely no one in the market for a brand new S Class / 7 / A8 wants an estate! The market is only petrolheads that can man maths them as a 3 year old purchase at 25% of the new price - literally no-one else! I'd be one of those (would love a Lexus LS600 estate - £150k new, £40k a few years old, all the toys would never go wrong.....) - I think it's a great idea but the uber SUV genre has killed any demand for luxo estate barges.

I liked it when you could get a petrol V6 in stuff like the Mondeo and Vectra etc as well.

Indeed - run of the mill stuff with multicylinder engines just felt that much more "special"

Just estate cars in general! I've always loved estates and would always choose one over a saloon or SUV.

I wish Alfa made an estate version of the Giulia, that would be a cracking thing especially in Quadrofoglio format.

Likewise Volvo should make a proper estate car - the V90 has just ended production with nothing in the pipeline to replace it, Volvo choosing to pursue several different scales of SUV instead.

My current car is a MK1 Mazda 3 MPS.

There was rumour a while back the MPS was going to be reborn but it was peddled for a horrible SUV.

I'd love them to bring this back as well.

Agree. BMW 320i with a naturally aspirated inline six petrol engine.

Also, rear-wheel-drive by default on BMWs. Yes, M240i, I'm looking at you!

Yes. The ‘basic’ BMW 2 litre six was an absolute peach. So smooth.

Cheap convertible versions of everyday cars, they where all the range in the early 00s, focus, Astra, Megane, golf, EOS even a nisssn micra, now all replaced with fake SUVS With no shape

They were average cars but even a crap car with the roof down is so much fun and enjoyable, convertibles in general are a dying breed, I can only think of a few, and apart from the MX5 they re all expensive

Off the top of my head, there s the MX5, mini, BMW 4 series, Mercedes CLE & SL, Porsche boxter and 911, before you get to exotics like Aston Martin and Bentley
Audi don t have a single one in the range, a few years back there was the TT, A4 or A5 & the R8
The z4 and 2 series are dead
Even the t roc and evoque had versions

Also, 3 door hatchbacks that looked completely different to the 5 door versions, like the Kia ceed and Leon mk3
