So who has many hundred of channels, and do you watch any of them? We just have the basic terrestrial channels, BBC1, BBCfivepast, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. We used to have a full satellite package many years ago, but didnt really want to watch anything, it was nearly all crap rotated from one week to another.

Is it any better lately, and what is there for petrolheads?

I had Sky for years, until it dawned on me that you pay for utter crap. I have freeview at my mums while I am back in UK and it has all you need. news, documentary, the usual terra channels, and a few others. men and motors, eurosport UK, etc...

we've got sky but ditched the movies package a few years ago because we just didn't watch them. We've kept the sports though.

When I get a chance (soaps permitting, I do trawl the other channels, discovery, autobiography, etc, as well as some of the music channels.

Years ago when a friend of mine got a huge motorised dish when sky was analogue, I asked her if she was turned into a total TV slave, due to the number of channels - she said just the opposite, with that many to choose from it makes you more fussy about what you want to watch, and you just ditch the rest. I've tried to do the same.

I think it was a bad move when granada took over men and motors, cos all the decent re-runs have stopped now - van der valk, the professionals, sweeney, etc

I wouldn't bother with more than freeview. Buying more channels just means it takes longer to discover that there is nothing on.

Haven't got it, but when I watch it at work or at mates houses, the only things I watch on it are Paramount Comedy for Frasier, South Park etc, Sky One for Simpsons, UKGold for classic comedies, and Discovery for bits too. Other than Sports the rest of it is utter crap!!

It is a dish... look at the shape of it. A long way off it curves down and touches the ground, which is how the sheep got back down again after losing their wings.

We wouldnt mind a few extra channels, we just have the 5 terrestrial(sp?) channels, but UK gold, National Geographic, History etc. would spice up the TV, even though its hardly on.
How much does sky cost these days?

Cannot beleive we cannot get Freeview in the centre of Northampton! Its a city FFS!

I haven't got Eurosport on my freeview! Is that a recent thing which I need to retune for?

I've got the full Sky package but I am watching it less and less because I have bought so many TV series on DVD, they pretty much fill my week at the moment.

Just bought a new TV that has a Freeview box buit in, after ditiching Sky over 18 months ago. I didn't really want the Freeview stuff.....I feel invaded, violated.

You're not missing much, believe me.....

Oh no, hang on. If you're life is not complete without having ringtone adverts blasted into your retinas and eardrums every 2 minutes....Freeview may solve all your needs.....

I have the full sky package less the sports channels.

I used to channel hop trying to find something on. But since I have sky+ I dont do that. I record things that interest me so when I do sit down to watch things, I have a choice of things I want to watch.

The main ones I watch are the film channels and
Men & Motors
Discovery
Discovery wings
Discovery Home & Lesure
(in fact most of the documentary chanels)
UKTV Food (like my grub)
Sky One
Some of the animal channels
National Geographic
Science

But like a say I might only like one program on each channel and record just those and with series link on sky+ im never without something to watch.

I have found such a change with Sky+ that I dont think having sky without it is really worth it.

We have got freeview and it is very good. I especially like UKTV history, BBC3/4 and Men & motors. However, there are loads of channels locked out such as Discovery and UK Gold. You can sign up to "Top up TV" to get a card to unlock the chanels (plus you can only use it with certain boxes). One off fee of £20 then a monthly subscription of £7.99 but if you are going to go this route than you may as well get cable.
