4.7 S Sportshift 2 gear whine.
Discussion
Test drove a Sportshift 2 S today (a late 2011 car), mid 40's mileage. Most things were fine, but the nagging issue was some whine in 1st and 2nd gear on the test drive. Not intrusive, but present. If you were in a traffic jam trickling along at 10-15mph its quite noticeable.
Is this the norm, or should it be quiet? Definitely sounded like gear noise - like very quiet straight cut gears would.
Thx

Have you driven a car (not specifically as Aston) with a single mass flywheel? At low RPM you get a chatter sort of sound. Would also be present in a higher gear if you were labouring the engine. If the car you drove had a twin plate clutch and lightened flywheel, it could be that.
Difficult to diagnose though, and obviously wouldn’t want it to be anything more sinister. Hopefully they’ll be a few more replies to help you out soon too.

Its not a rattle or clatter, its a whine which increases in pitch with engine rpm. A different frequency for each gear 1st and 2nd. Its quiet in other gears.Difficult to diagnose though, and obviously wouldn t want it to be anything more sinister. Hopefully they ll be a few more replies to help you out soon too.
Interesting you should bring this up. I'm starting to look into this on my Rapide. It almost sounds like a supercharger whine. While it could be the diff, the other candidates are the idler pulleys and belts at the front of the engine or the alternator. Other could be the oil pump was something I had read. I'm not sure yet though, but it doesn't seem to be major. Most likely and old bearing/pulley as it's aged, apparently quite cheap to fix. Personally I enjoy the sound.

Should hear just behind angry V12 noises a whine that increases with rev's that sounds like a supercharger.

It does not follow with engine rpm, different in 1st gear to second, and no noise in neutral. Definitely from the driveline.https://jumpshare.com/s/URPCbmATsVcvOArjSTYQ

Does sound a bit like a very quiet supercharger, but makes the noise both on and off throttle.
