I bought a Remington all in one for around £50 which has a head for shaving the scalp and then a foil one for the face. I though this would be good for many years, having read Remington being a well regarded name, but after 1.5 years the foil one is breaking apart and very sharp edges with the exposed broken bits.

What irks me is I asked about a replacement head and they had the gall to charge about £30 for a replacement for head which is just a bit of plastic and some foil which probably costs about £3 to make or less.

I no longer want to support a company which engages in such daylight robbery. The head shaver still works good so I will continue to use that but thinking about getting a dedicated face electric shaver.

I tried all manner of standard blade shavers such as the classic bic and various others that I have long forgotten but I hated using those so much I would dread shaving day as it would take me like 30 minutes with most of the time spent cleaning the hair from the blades.

This electric I used was somewhat better. I no longer swore on shave day but its efficacy was not really impressive.

I bought one of those rotary 3 spinny bit ones once. It was only quite cheap. It worked well from what I recall but again the huge drawback was it was extremely difficult to clean and so a 5 minutes shave was overshadowed with a 15 minute cleaning afterwards.

So my criteria are it must be USB or otherwise 12v but I guess USB is the only option there as I want to run it in my van and don't have AC.

Must be relatively easy to clean.

Not super expensive. Probably up to £100 if it was very good and would last years but would look to pay more like £50.

That is all I can think of for the main criteria right now.

BTW, is it a USB-powered one you really need, or does it just need to be rechargeable (i.e. no wire whilst using)?

Was going to suggest this Panasonic one @ £114 that I got for my father last year, but realised the one with the included cleaning station is well over your budget, and it's mains-charged, not USB...so probably not any use to you at all biggrin

I've always found that the cheaper end of the 'big brands' (Wahl, Remington, Braun, Panasonic, Philips, etc.) tend to be a false economy...1) because they don't last long, 2) because they're made to throw away, not repair.

Thanks, for the reply. Ah yes I just meant powered or chargeable by USB. 12V would be even better but I doubt there any many of those about, but USB is much more common so I asked about that.

Any that run by DC power I could use. I have adapted things that work for mains supplies when their adaptors say they actually convert from AC to DC which is actually quite common.

I would pay a hundred if it lasted me for many years and the replacement parts. Indeed I have broken out of the false economy of cheap hiking boots and paid premium for those so I do pay when it is worth it.

I had a main wahl that lasted for 15 years. I am sure I didn't pay a lot for that one though as I would have been a student at that time! I may have paid a bit because I remember that a barber specifically recommended it to me when I asked him about a good one and that is a good service life if you ask me!

My son bought me a Philips series 5000 (S5887) for Xmas which turned out to be the best shaver I've had.

V easy to clean and it comes with a charging stand with usb type A connector but you can buy a USB cable for £3 which plugs in to the shaver.

USB charging seems quite rare: I was looking for the same thing for a travel razor as the charger for my Panasonic is stupidly large & I always have several USB chargers with me. There's this one but £180 is too much of a gamble for me & the cheaper 7000 series version gets a "frequently returned" flag on Amazon.

I have had to litigate against Remington (Spectrum Bramds UK) and I have never come across such a crowd in all of my twenty-five years of consumer lawyering.

I bought a RX5 headshaver. If failed, after a few weeks. Sent it back to Mr. Bezos and the replacement failed after a few weeks, sent that one back to him and so it went on.

I was in hospital, a bit bored, and another one failed again, so sent it back to Spectrum Brands UK directly and what occurred next could be used as a masterclass in how not to operate. They were staggeringly deceitful in how they operated with regards to CRA(2015) and pulled every, single, stroke possible.

I ended up litigating against them in the end, before they eventually folded and sent me my £49.99 back three days before our mediation appointment.

In terms of headshavers and shavers, anything by Rossifur from Amazon has always served me well.

I've had a Phillips series 3000 for many years now, after ploughing through many good reviews.

It's a rechargable 3 spinny thing, the charge holds for at least a week and to clean it, you flip the top and run it under the tap.

Wow, almost £300, you must be a great father, lol. That is 2 votes for Phillips now, the 3000 recommendation seems more my speed at £87.

If I had to shave every day it might be considered a good investment for a pricier one but even though I am now middle aged I still only get scruffy looking wiry fluff round most of my face which I only have to shave once per week.

Haha, yes sadly most customers will not bother which is why I think they can get away with this stuff, which most of the time, they can.

Sounds promising and much more within my price range at £87 than the nearly £300 for the 5000 mentioned above.

I certainly don't want to support Remington again after this first experience.

I recall the problem with the 3 spinner I tried was that while the foil bits flipped open to allow cleaning all the shaven mush was extremely difficult to get out of the nooks and crannies. No such issues in this case?

I’ve gone one of those too and it’s a great bit of kit. Even better is Phillips’ customer service - the original one failed after two years and they sent me a new, upgraded one FOC, no questions asked.

I was imagining all sorts of possibilities when I saw this on mobile and the title was trimmed to just "Reliable and easy to clean usb powered ..."

Anyway know I know it's something vanilla I'll add another recommendation for something from Philips.

Oh wow, that is another great plus then and what was sorely lacking from Remington. CS is as important as the product.

Oh nice, thanks. Now you're talking more my ballpark!

My current one was better behaved last shave. I think maybe the difference is I have tried letting it charge to full after each shave the last time as before I would let it run down before charging again and it sounded like it was limping along which is what made me think keeping topped up might be better. Still have to be careful with that nasty exposed jagged metal on the foil though!

Very pleased with it.
