10 different photographers would give you 10 different answers but you could have a look at the Sony RX100 range - very competent cameras and tiny so ideal for travel/hiking etc. Just buy the newest one you can afford (it'll be second hand I would guess). Cheers

What do you want to take pictures of, landscapes, animals, buildings etc? What size are you comfortable with?

That makes a big difference in what might be best.

I have a Panasonic LUMIX TX100 although don’t think they are available new now. It is great as a travel camera and the 1inch sensor gives decent results.

I’m looking to take pictures and videos of landscape whilst hiking and also doing some vlog type stuff.

Maybe a bit big to carry around hiking imo? I used to take a DSLR walking and it was a bit of a pain tbh.

My LUMIX TZ or TS 100 in America is pretty good as an all rounder that can fit in your pocket easily

Kind of hate to say it but won’t an iPhone 17 Pro outperform most £500 cameras whilst also being a phone, satnav, browser etc?

Mines an iPhone 12 Pro. I don’t upgrade every year as it’s not worth it.

I must say that a good mobile may be the better option - the quality of photos is really good.

I have a range of cameras: phone - Google Pixel, compact - Panasonic TZ, action camera - DJI, and Panasonic MFT - G9ii. Each performs its purpose well.

Which I choose depends on what I'm doing and what I require. I'll say what make/model of camera I have, but make no recommendations. Someone posted that if you ask 10 photographers, there'll be 10 different recommendations. The odd thing is, they'll all be decent options.

The camera phone is handy because I have it with me all the time. If I'm going on a walk and don't want to carry anything else, that's what I go for. If I want decent images as well, maybe A3, and a zoom, then the extra quality of the TZ compensates for the slight extra weight. If the going is difficult and/or I want a record of it, the action camera picks itself. If I'm going on a long, medium or short walk and want first class images, I take the G9ii. If high quality video is essential, the G9 scores here and it's still compact enough, perhaps with the 50mm equivalent lens, which weighs nothing. I can carry the G9 attached to a belt, either the one on my backpacks if I'm taking one of them, or with the action belt I have for no backpack days. The better weight distribution means it is unnoticeable. I tend to start with the G9 and work down on the choice of which to take. Sometimes I'll take the G9 and the DJI, and have the mobile with me.

There's no camera I'm aware of that does it all. Compromise is one option, choices is another.

I've found over the years, so many years, that the option for a 'Jack of all trades' means results that are less that exactly what you want at everything.

The latest iPhone doesn't come near the quality of a second hand Sony RX100 (I know, I have them both - and half a dozen other digital cameras).

It's not the amount of pixels, it's the size of the sensor and how close it is to the lens. Always a fact. (Well it will be until it isn't... and that day will come, but it sure ain't here yet).

Having said that, if you always have a phone with you, at least you have a decent camera these days. 40 years ago it was a large case and a stiff shoulder.

If you do get a Sony RX100 I'd recommend one of these that makes it easier to hold

Great camera (a low light specialist if that is what you want) but pretty big and heavy for hiking I'd have thought...
