Anyone ever get a sore stomach after drinking? (I don't mean a hangover that goes after the following day).

I've noticed that as I'm getting older even only having 3 or 4 pints of Guinness will potentially mean I get a sore stomach - not the next day, but the day after, and it can last for a few days after that. I have a feeling that it might be gastritis, induced by alcohol, but not too sure.

I had it a a couple of years back on a few occasions (always after drinking) - got it checked out (tube down the gut) and was told there was no ulcer/anything dodgy - just inflamed gut.

I'm at the point where I'm contemplating knocking alcohol on the head entirely. It's seems pointless if I'm going to feel it in my guts for a few days, after 3 pints.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

It used to do it to me quite often, especially if I had not eaten.
I just don't drink alcohol now

Just for experimentation, maybe try a few cans of 0% Guinness and see if the reaction is the gluten hit in the beer or the alcohol. In any case, Guinness 0 is pretty decent for zero alcohol beer, so the experiment will not be without pleasure drink

I've something similar, symptom diagnosis via LLM points to gastritis. It's not just alcohol but probably also coffee, acidic stuff like orange juice, spicy food, painkillers. All my favorite things.

Stomach and gut need a rest, abstinence, that must be sustained over weeks/month otherwise it just comes back.

Thanks all - yes I’m mostly on Guinness Zero these days and am very glad it exists!

Been having a read around and have ordered some zinc l-Carnosine. Will take a break from the booze for a few months and after finishing the zinc course, will try once more. It would be a shame not to enjoy the occasional 3-4pt session, but not the end of the world.

You can get omeprazole otc now - I tend to buy it if I need to take NSAIDs for any length of time.

I get stomach cramps with beer, lager and gin (not at the same time). Non-alcoholic beer is fine, and so is wine etc. Too much caffine seems to set it off too.

Don't really drink enough to get to the bottom of it, and it's no problem now to drink non-alcoholic stuff when out. Drink caffine free coffee at home, but one a day with caffine is OK.

I do take prescribed pantoprazole for reflux - that hasn't made any difference, I was the same before I started taking it.

No, neither of those things cause me any issues. Although, like most of us, I’d prefer less stress!

Thanks for that, I wasn’t aware. Is it any better than having Gaviscon handy?

Massively so. Reduces acid secretion for many hours rather than just neutralising what’s in your stomach when you take it.

I'm mainly a beer drinker (45 year career). I'm also partial to a G&T and a few of them can give me that sore tummy feeling if I over indulge. I'm in no doubt its 'spirits' or higher alcohol content inflaming the stomach.

I'm also prescribed omeprazole which has zero effect on the pain. In short the only way I've found to prevent stomach pain it is to reduce my alcohol intake. I take it as a message from my body to basically cut down. As I get older the messages get more intense sadly :-) which might actually be a blessing in disguise in the long term.

I hear you DT. I’ve tried a fair few concoctions in an effort to get rid of the soreness, but I think you’re right. Ultimately it’s time to knock the occasional “sessions” on the head. But I would still like to have the occasional 3-4 pint evening, if possible.

Day 1 of the zinc l-carnosine, noticed a strange heat in my stomach an hour or so after taking the capsules. Lasted about an hour or so. Plan is to run this for the next 8 wks, along with no alcohol, then test with a few pints.

Guess its the poison in the drink you are imbibing. Try not drinking and see if it goes away.

It’s defintely caused by alcohol irritating my gut. It was more the annoyance that as I age, it doesn’t take much alcohol to do it. I was looking to see if anyone else has experienced this, and if anyone had managed to fix it. Will report back after trying my current plan out.

Omeprezole is a drug used primarily for acid reflux, sounds like you have poor gut health, a pro biotic or a digestive enzyme would probably help matters.

Omeprazole reduces the secretion of stomach acid. If you have an irritated stomach, or you are taking aspirin or ibuprofen which inhibit the secretion of protective mucous in the stomach, reducing the acid secretion reduces the damage to the compromised stomach lining.
