Sony TV server or network problem - Help please
Discussion
Hi
Sorry for some thicko questions, but Google is not helping me.
I have an old Sony TV that wont connect to the APPS saying:
[This application can not be launched because there is a server problem]
After messing about I can bet another screen saying:
[Servers could not be found. Please check the server connections and network settings]
Is the ‘server’ the wifi?
No mention how to check the server and network though – are the server and network the same thing?
Thanks
Andy

Is the TV 'Smart', or is it connected via a Firestick/Roku/etc.?
By 'APPS', do you mean BBC iPlayer/ITVx etc.?
Have you recently changed anything on your home WiFi - new provider, new router? When did the TV last connect properly?
Do you have a WiFi and internet connection problem with any other device?

Check your TV network settings, make sure it has internet, try plugging it direct to the router via ethernet if you struggle connecting via wifi.
The apps may be out of date and you may struggle to update them on an old TV, unfortunately it's an issue on older TVs, I have an older Samsung, non of the apps work any more.
You could try updating the software/firmware of the TV.

Yes smart (but probably not very! - it's about 8 years old)By 'APPS', do you mean BBC iPlayer/ITVx etc.?

Yes - iplayer etc
It has not worked for a while.
Wifi and internet connect to my other devices and appears on the tv to have connected
The 'server' will be the Sony backend systems (either, 'in the cloud' or inside Sony's own datacenters) that provide their 'app store' or whatever the equivalent is.
There's absolutely no guarantee with a lot of 'smart' devices that the manufacturer will continue to pay for and maintain their backend systems for more than a few years.
What's the model of the TV?

Thank you - I suspect it is because it is an old tv because a few apps are working. The apps may be out of date and you may struggle to update them on an old TV, unfortunately it's an issue on older TVs, I have an older Samsung, non of the apps work any more.

Is it an Android TV Sony model or one of the previous ones?
Our Android one from 2017 is still just about hanging on in terms of apps working, our previous one from 2014 is effectively just a dumb monitor now.
Not the biggest issue as we either use Sky Q or a Google TV for the apps stuff, but as mentioned sadly smart TVs do seem to have an expiry date in terms of the smart bit working.

This is the other point - even if the manufacturer keeps their backend bits alive and working, individual apps may also become obsolete as they're all from third parties. Amazon removed/broke the Prime Video app on our old Samsung Smart TV. We actually use an XBox rather than a firestick now- similar range of TV apps (iPlayer, Netflix, etc.) , plus a DVD player for all our old movies. Only problem is the need to frequently upgrade the software before you can use it.
