Firstly, apologies I don’t know how to set up a poll.

I’m really wondering where People of our collective mindset tend to buy their cars and hopefully discuss anecdotes below. Can anybody help me?

I’m thinking
New/approved
Used dealers – how do you choose a good one?
eBay dealers
Auction
Private

Any help appreciated

. I wouldn’t have a clue. But If you simply posted what you’ve already said and if the thread became reasonably popular, you could simply collate the responses. The odd one out concerns what is a good dealer, and I think that is a separate topic as it’s far more subjective than the other simple choices. I imagine that you basic 5 alternatives could ‘run and run’ if kept simple.

For me people sometimes place to much emphasis on the dealer, the car in question is always the more relevant factor.

Personally I find the majority don't actually place enough priority on the car/buying on condition/doing your own hpi/vecheck/receipts/history/a decent test drive & making sure everything works

When I bought a couple of nearly new cars (less than 1 year old) I bought AUC ones from main dealers.

Now I run older ones I prefer buying privately as you get to meet the previous owner and get a feel for how they have treated them.

Yes, there is a strong argument that you are buying the car and not the dealer. However, many potential buyers are not ‘car savvy’, don’t read reviews, etc and so depend on advice from the dealer. Small well established independents are well placed to offer this ; yes, they are sellers, but they also value repeat business and referrals.

As you've been here for about 15 years, I guess that it can't do any harm if you try:
Go to Sub-forum i.e. PistonHeads » Gassing Station » General Gassing » Car Buying
Click on 'Start New Topic'
You should see a row of options for 'Type' click on 'Poll', you should be able to follow it from there.

See my earlier post above, this option usually needs to be manually enabled by one of the site moderators. Otherwise simply just isn’t there, cheers.

soad - Thanks - I missed your link.
I did not realise that it was an option, I thought that it was always available
