Hive query

I've inherited a Hive setup in with the house I've moved into.

However there is no hub, just the thermostat and the receiver wired to the boiler. I was slightly confused to begin with as I thought all communication went via the hub. However, the thermostat controls the boiler just fine and has been working with no issues.

Until this morning. Thermostat shows "Searching" and there is a red light on the receiver. Rebooted both but no joy, changed batteries in the thermostat but no joy.

Any thoughts?

We have 3 parts, the thermostat, the receiver connected to the boiler and then the hub which is plugged directly into the broadband router. You will need the hub to control it, can you manually operate it from the thermostat? Do you have the hive app

Only the Thermostat and Receiver - presumably the previous occupant took the hub, who knows.

Since moving in (June) the Thermostat talked to the Receiver and controlled the boiler with no problems. I've set up schedules on the Thermostat no bother - all works great with no Hub or app..

It sounds like your thermostat was previously in range of the receiver and now it's not - for whatever reason.

I have a Hive system and the hub, as far as I know, the hub is only is there to give remote access via your router (ie to control your system when you're out of the home via the app). Without the hub it is a local system 'standalone mode'

Power down: Turn off the boiler at the isolation switch near the receiver.

Detach: Take the thermostat off its wall plate.

Pair: Take the thermostat to the receiver. Put the receiver into binding mode (press and hold button until light changes) and power on the thermostat to find it.

Power up: Switch the boiler back on.

The hub is only needed if you want to use the app and control when you're away from home. The thermostat and boiler will still communicate fine without it.

Apparently the hub is linked to an account so you're not supposed to leave it in situ when you move. Any new owner will need to buy their own hub. I'd highly recommend it as without one it's just a wireless thermostat/timer

Excellent- glad it worked.

I don't live in a particularly big house, but my boiler (and therefore receiver) is quite a distance from the thermostat, which, in turn, is a long distance to the hub. I bought the Hive signal booster which solved the problem of the various components not seeing each other. I am not sure it would help in your situation as it might need the hub as part of the chain (no idea), but am mentioning it for others.

Hive components don't seem to have much of a reach - but at least you know now to try to keep your thermostat in range and what to do if it drops out.
