Getting at air filter

I have searched round the forum about the air filter as I noticed mine was very mucky yesterday. I would like to at least turn it round to get an even distribution of crud before it needs cleaning properly but its not the most accessable of things.
Whats the best way of getting at it in peoples experience?

I have the leven grill on the front of mine and it is just held in place with self tepped screws...remove the front grill and the filter is there held on with hose clip. Not sure how the standard grill is held on.

For the new style grill, undo the jubillee clip, and then you can pull the air filter off, and out of the front with a little bit of squashing. Make sure that you have removed the jubillee clip when you squash the filter through the grill as otherwise you will scratch the paint.

If it's that mucky and you're going to loosen it to turn it round, you might as well remove it and give it a thorough clean, as otherwise you'll have a fully-crudded filter that might restrict the air getting in!
If it's an oily filter, then you'll need to clean it with white spirit and then re-oil it with foam filter oil (any good motor bike shop will sell you some).
