On my e39 the tool kit in the boot won’t stay closed. The plastic screw to open and close it has aged and the thread has deteriorated. The tools are hardly used and in the nearly seven years I’ve owned the car I’ve probably only opened it a handful of times.

Is it possible to get the plastic screw item new or do I try to find a used one?

I imagine I have to take out the boot lid lining to fix it ?

Any suggestions welcome.

Try wrapping the screw part in PTFE tape until it’s thick enough to bite

I had this issue in my sapphire black E39; that did the trick

You’ll have to try and find a replacement from a breakers (the whole lid etc)

You can still get the plastic screw and the receptacle from BMW (part numbers 71111179444 & 71111179445), or from auction sites.

That looks like the exact thing 3d printers were invented for.
