Hi,

Hope you can help. I work within the IT field in support but this one has testing me.

A company user (fairly senior) has retired and has asked to keep his company mobile phone. Management peers have agreed but has stated that the number is retained by the company.

The user has built his digital life around the Apple ID (email for the account is a company domain) and company number. He said he cannot lose his apps and WhatsApp chats / groups, emails etc sigh.

Issue is that the phone is well managed by company polices. Ok fair , I can remove these policies from the phone, remove email and any business applications and data

I'm not a personal iOS user but do support them for our staff generally but I cannot be arsed with this. I wish the company would just go out and buy him a blank iPhone. Would make my life easier. he isn't gaining much in a 4 year old iPhone 12.

Further to this the user lives 200 miles away so supporting this remotely is impossible. We have agreed to meet at a mid location in a few weeks but I have around 2-3 hours to maybe sort this out at that time. I have stated that he needs to come to the meet with a new phone number and SIM (not yet inserted into the phone)and a brand new working personal email address. Someone else has been tasked with monitoring his email inbox for personal emails and forwarding over for 3 months.

Has any one changed their number for WhatsApp and retained chats / groups. I googled and see that you can change your number, but not really in a position to be able to test that prior to our meet.

I may have missed some info.

The user should be able to backup their WhatsApp chats and media to their new personal email account.

When they have a successful backup they can change their number in WhatsApp account settings. Not essential to backup but let's be honest it's sensible, particularly in this case.

They'll still have all their chats and history but if it's like Android they'll get a prompt to update their existing contacts with new number. Otherwise they'll disappear in WhatsApp when contacts look for them.

If they've got any MFA app on the work phone using the work email as login and backup get them to change login to new email. Otherwise you'll continue to get calls when they can no longer access their Saga account.

I did this for myself when I stopped using a company number and changed to a new personal number. I was already using a personal email to backup.
