Hi All - ive had great advice when asking similiar in past .

Ive just bought a new Hard Tail - looking for new trails / days / afternoons out in South Wales / South West .

Ive always stayed local as I am spoiled for choice on my doorstep and Ive riden mainly road bikes further afield last 10 years.

Im Swindon based - ideally within 2 hours drive.

Im not really interested in the standard harder core coloured trails, more a decent day out with some great views and general trails , rather than flat out for for 20 mins then back to the start - if that makes sense.

Ideally quieter to escape the crowds .

Im pretty decent rider , but 40yrs+ so dont want anything too mad as I dont bounce well anymore.... gravel trails are great as well

Cheers all

Haldon forest near Exeter isn't bad, can do the blue and red loops for a longer ride, can get a bit busy at weekends though, a little further and your onto Dartmoor which has lots of routes. Burrator reservoir to Princetown is a decent enough pedal, can be a good 15 mile ish loop depending on how rough or easy you want the descent back to burrator.

There’s a fair few trail centers in south wales that offer easy to follow loops at cwm carn, fod, afan and bechfa - all feel like a bit of an adventure because of not many people but safe enough to do by yourself. Another option is Surrey hills but would need to know the area or join others.

Try Trailforks app or website to see what else is available. Not all trails are on it but you can use it to find new spots.

Forest of Dean is nearby and a fun half day. Quite busy though.

A little further afield CwmCarn and Afan are great for a full day

Edited to add. And of course you have the Ridgeway on your doorstep. Some great long rides to be had with superb views

Hello mate,

Same part of the world as you. Really into mtb, albeit more descent-focused. Afan, FoD, Cwm Carn, BPW, all within two hours or so.

I haven’t ridden much in the last year as got totally fed up with having to drive to ride, so if you know anything decent in our neck of the woods please suggest!

Slight curve ball, but if you'd prefer an off road bike ride as opposed to a mountain bike ride (graded trails), why not the South Downs Way. Did a 38k ride there a few months ago and there were some great views.

With regards views in Wales, it's further afield but Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons are probably the options, probably use a riding/GPS app, don't use them myself but I understand they're a thing.

Hiya, im near Junction 15 of M4 & commute to Marlborough lots via bike.

My office is near Savernake Forest so I ride round there most weeks, which is ace

Great Trails from Liddington clump towards Marl/Aldbourne/Mildenhall which I ride lots.

All are more XC/Briddleways/Single track witht the odd downhill (& plenty of ups)

Loads of that kind of riding on Salisbury Plain, some interesting scenery too, tanks, helicopters, squaddies etc, but also bustards, deer, and loads of other wildlife.

Has to be Cwmcarn. Epic trails for all abilities. You can just cycle up the fire-road or tarmac road with some of the best views in South Wales overlooking the Severn. I usually cycle in my lunchtime as relatively close and hardly every see anyone on the trails. The carpark can get a bit busy on weekends, but there are so many DH/Enduro trails it is perfect.

Forest of Dean is great fun, some epic blue trails and loads of enduro trails out in the forest, not much of a scenic view and is heaving in on the weekend in the car park, but usually you can get away from the crowds.

Never enjoyed Afan and a long drive away for you.
