Evening everyone, my car which is parked outside on the drive with a trickle charger has developed a recent problem with one of the wing mirrors. On start up the mirror won't fully open and retract on the passenger side. The motor does work, but won't extend fully. Any suggestions from anybody as to the likely cause and possible solution would be very appreciated.

Due to a very unexpected change in health prior to Christmas, I am unable to drive for 6 months so I am slowly counting the days until I can drive the car again. I have a growing list of jobs that could be done on the vehicle, but not necessarily all the money to do them, so will have to prioritise.

Are you sure the mirror head isn't out of its detent? If you grab the head and manually open the mirror to the "fully out" position, does it click into place?

Thank you for your swift response LTP. Yes, it does “click” into place if you gently push the wing mirror into the fully open position. When locking the car, it then doesn’t fully retract or open fully.

The usual culprit in electric mirrors are the plastic ring and worm gears driven by the motor. These need silicone grease lubrication and dry out over time restricting full movement. It's also possible for these to strip gear teeth if operated when frozen, however this usually renders them inoperable which isn't the case here.

The 12 min point in the video shows the plastic ring gears.

Every now and again my passenger side mirror does this, it has always been remedied by squirting a bit of WD40 type product up into the mirror housing via the little hole underneath. wink

Many thanks 5S Alive and Raceway for your suggestions. I will look at doing these when the weather improves and I am able to do it physically.
