V50 clutch pedal issue

Hi all. got in the trusty steed this morning and the clutch pedal immediately felt very light. no amount of pumping stiffened it up but the pedal always returned to its rest position. I couldn't engage any gears. The returning pedal makese think the slave cylinder is fine but honestly don't know. Any ideas guys?
