My son is struggling with the WiFi in his university accommodation, particularly for his PS5. Is anyone aware of any products that might improve the situation?

My understanding of WiFi range extenders is that they need to be on the same ring main as the WiFi router to work, obviously that’s not possible in a university accommodation block

Thanks

Michael

If it is the university accommodation wifi, then the powerline system you are referring to won't work. They don't have to be on the same ring, but you do need to plug one into the router, which you can't. A solution may be to get a WiFi repeater in an area of good signal, partway towards your sons PS5. However, they are not always brilliant and have the possibility of being nicked or turned off, if it's in a hallway or public area.

Whatever you do, the university IT department might take a dim view of it. Be very careful doing anything with a university halls network like repeating a signal.

Has your son tried asking for the poor signal to be investigated? It must also be a problem for doing uni work? That would be my angle on it - have the IT department do the upgrade.

I'm still not sure I understand the difference between twisted and untwisted CAT cables, but UT landed when I was at Uni. The NEED for UT drove us to waste far too much time and effort working out how to network local machines, at one stage we had cable hanging out between doom windows....... Some of my most memorable time in Uni involved solving networking issues smile.

Forget WiFi, get a £20 switcher from Argos and see how far you push trailing cable down the hallway before estates grass you up to the dean!!
