Calling D4 A8 owners, how suicidal?
Discussion
Flirting with the idea of a D4 A8 3.0 TDI, partly becuase they're stoopid cheap.
Currently shopping C7 A6/7 and can't help but notice the value prop of the D4 A8. I note that you get the Tip box by default on the A8, which is a tick in its favour versus the S Tronic dual-clutch in the A6/7 (unless you get the BiTurbo engine, which I don't want due to exotic cost of turbo failures on that lump).
I'm assuming the core engine and box proposition is as solid as in other models if maintained properly (i have that V6 with the Tip box in another car still going strong at 207,000 miles). S0, how much of a liability is the rest of the car?
Apologies in advance for lack of research, but A4/6 I am familiar with, A8, no idea. So am unclear on aspects like suspension. Are they passive as standard? I wouldn't fancy looking after air suspension (hence wouldn't buy a C7 A6 Allroad). What are the electronics like? And how horrific are parts costs on things like brakes and suspension arms. Thanks!

Turbos on BiTDI are fine and can be refurbished like any other unit should a problem arise.
Air suspension on A6/8 is generally good, and repair kits/replacement parts are affordable from someone like Miessler should they be required.
A8s are complicated in electronic terms and not really one for a DIYer or most independent garages. Needs a good specialist, or just do what most old/cheap A8 owners do and sell it instead of fixing it
