I'm in the market for a V8 and these have caught my attention (not for the first time) given how affordable they seem to be. My previous V8 experience did not go so well (E61 BMW 550i) and I've been keen to correct my V8 fix ever since.

I've done plenty of research on the S Type so I think I have a good idea of what to look out for when I do go to see one.

I'd like to find out from other owners how an S Type R would compare to an XF (in X260 form). SWMBO has recently acquired an XF-S with the Supercharged 3.0 V6. I do spend a lot of time also driving this when she's not in the mood. How much of a difference is their likely to be having an S Type R when we already have the XF? In performance terms they match up fairly evenly - 380bhp Vs 400bhp. I think the XF is a little heavier but has the superior 8 Speed ZF so I don't think there will be much in it in acceleration terms. Of course the V8 will have its own added character.

So has anyone ever driven, or better still owned both of these? Is there any real point adding the S Type R to the driveway when we already have the XF-S?

The S Type would not be used as my daily, I have a BMW 3 series for mundane duties. I intend to use it as a weekend/long distance cruiser with some spirited drives thrown in.

Have you considered an F Type 5.0 V8 n/a? I had one for 3 years, possibly the best car I ever had. 380 or so BHP, good performance and an unstressed engine, drove like a Jaguar should do. Got good MPG too if not driven insanely.

Only changed the car because the wife found getting in/out became a problem with her arthritis. We replaced it with a LR DS.

There is no N/A 5.0 F-Type as far as I'm aware. In any case, an F Type would be 5 times the price so that's not an option. Unless you meant the XK? Is the 5.0 N/A more reliable than the 4.2 SC? I already have a coupe so probably wouldn't be in the market for another.

The only other option I'm still considering is the XJR (X350), but from what I understand it won't be as engaging to drive as the S Type despite it's lower weight.

Oh yes there is!

It was the standard model for the USA market. It was never marketed in the UK but was always available here for special order. I had one for three years. It was previously a one owner car and I found out that that owner was a Jaguar executive. In the service book it was described as a "Studio" model which I assume meant that it was beyond Portfolio. It had every conceivable extra.

If you look on PH Classifieds you'll see that they come up from time to time.

Here's a pic of mine.

Ha ha yes I know of the 5.0 XFs. They are an interesting proposition for sure and one I have considered. How's the reliability been with yours?

Car reliability was excellent. It did need a water pump replaced and this was done under warranty. Otherwise, nothing other than consumables to mention.

It's a sorely missed car by me!
