Identify this engine

I haven’t a clue so can’t give the right answer.
But I can point out a few things.

I had a dual mass flywheel and a clutch.

It was a straight five.

It had a cambelt.

The headbolts were Torx.

Cast block alloy head.

It had had an intense fire which had melted the head, pistons, bell housing.

One more thing, the bottom pulley had V belts not serpentine. Three belts by the looks.

Audi Quatro maybe? Its the pnly pre- Serpentine 5 cylinder i can think of.

Quick Google image search for 'Audi 2.2 block' certainly matches up, coolant port positions,, the general shape of the casting etc...

I agree, this area is similar to a pic of the vw 2.5l straight 5 diesel





Two vertical webs and the diagonal. Other details match up too. Not identical but definitely related

Doesn't look like the Audi 2.2 KV or 2.1 WR enginees if that helps.

I can see the word German cast into the side, so i would think its more likely to be VAG or similar in origin.

Seems plausible. Identifying what the rear axle came off would seem like a good idea, fairly hefty with drum brakes suggests a commercial or van-derived thing of some kind.

It was that axle with beefy drums that swayed me that way, I think the wheel laying there is I think unrelated as its a puny four stud thing

First thought was possibly a Mercedes OM602 or OM617 as the age fits, but the casting is the wrong shape for either of them.

Looking again at the rear axle it would appear to be a twin wheel setup and lots of LT's were so equipped.

Nope.
It has head studs and nuts, Td5 uses stretch bolts for the head.
