650s spider. Is 49k miles too many?
Discussion
49k miles
Colour and interior spec I want.
Nose lift.
No exterior carbon.
Is 49k miles 'too many'? On the bright side, I will not worry too much about putting miles on it!
£73k seems about right assuming there are no gremlins...which will be flushed out anyway as soon as I get it inspected.
There is a touch of th usual corrosion on the right front wheel arch.

Am I mad?

Short answer: "no"

Long answer:
Mileage is just a number, it is way, way, way, way less important than how well the car has been looked after, how it has been maintained, and what condition it is in. If it's been said once on here it's been said a thousand times; a well maintained "high" mileage car is likely to be less trouble than a garage queen.
Just be aware that you'll have to factor in the "high" miles when it comes to sell and factor that into the price, but £73k from a large dealer who aren't likely to stiff you on any repairs that show up from an inspection doesn't seem unreasonable.
Thorney Motorsport, who know a thing or two about maintaining used McLarens, put this video out this week. The title is "What McLaren is the worst for warranty claims?", and the answer is ones that don't get used. Low mileage isn't an issue per-se, as long as the car is used regularly, and high mileage doesn't even get a mention, it's the garage queens you need to watch out for according to Thorney. (He does say the 650S is the model he has repaired most often, but over the period he's been offering the warranty he's covered more of them so don't worry about that).

I've not heard of any major mileage-related issues with McLarens, nothing like 'engines go pop at 50k miles' or anything.
For me I'd want (a) to inspect the car closely for cosmetic issues to be sure I'm happy and (b) to have an independent inspection to have a chance of picking up any mechanical issues.
But based on the info available it sounds like a good buy.

This is a great looking car that will bring joy to any next owner.
Mileage has to be in context.
If it was a salesman’s motorway daily then no, not high mileage.
As a supercar, then there can’t be many McLaren with higher mileage currently listed for sale?
BUT this can be to your advantage as the very high mileage and condition is why it’s listed with Sytner Select and not with one of the Sytner owned McLaren dealerships.
This car is not able to meet the required standards for a “McLaren Approved” so use that to negotiate and reduce the price.
Being well looked after is far more important, nothing wrong with mileage. That said we all know in practice high mileage significantly reduces the buyer pool and asset value.
Please don’t take my post as a negative, rather from experience it is so easy to get caught up with such an exciting “bargain”. Taking out some of the emotions, there’s a better deal to be struck.
Good luck!

Always good to have the other side of the question put.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509286... . A bit lower mileage but a year older, not obviously a better choice esp given the known history for the car the OP's looking at.
After that you're paying £90k.
Personally I would not pay an extra 25% for low mileage, if the high mileage car checks out in person and at inspection.
The key thing is to buy a good car that will be reliable. This can't be guaranteed, but it's no less likely with a higher mile car. As the cars get older, I'd rather a higher mileage one which has been driven & serviced consistently (as this one has) rather than a lower mileage one which may well have sat almost unused for 6-12 months or more.

The oldest cars offered as McLaren approved currently are mid-2017. So I think for a 2015 car like this, the fact it's being offered non-approved by Sytner isn't really a reflection on the car. https://preowned.mclaren.com/eu/gb/en/vehicles?sor...

But is there, though? There's one other 650S Spider out there at a similar price, £72,500 on 42k mileshttps://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509286... . A bit lower mileage but a year older, not obviously a better choice esp given the known history for the car the OP's looking at.

I believe I am correct in saying that it maybe because it has fallen out of the Mclaren network regarding services, if its been done by an independent I understand it can't be offered with the warranty etcGood luck!

I will get a better picture once I have all the previous invoices - but the story seems to be 5k miles a year by a financial advisor up in Scotland that part exed it on a 750.
So I think I will be OK - thouh I am not very good at keeping black cars clean!

Put it this way, if you were selling this car to the dealer, they would be straight away (1) 20% extra miles means they can only offer a lower value, and (2) any differences in options between the two cars is irrelevant and doesn’t impact the value in the resale market.
If I was buying then that logic works both ways.
Any car is always worth less the higher the mileage.
I wouldn’t be put off by the mileage. My 12C is now on 62k and, apart from a failed soft close door latch, it has given me no problems over four years. I don’t count accumulator change as a problem as they are really a service item. About £2k to change a set.
Before you test drive, watch the Thorney video showing how to spot accumulators on their way out. You’ll already know about where to look for paint corrosion issue. I doubt there are any of these cars that are immune.
Looks to be excellent value at that price. Hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Congratulations on the new car. I bought one in December and I had the opposite worry of the mileage being really low at 5500. This was from a McLaren dealer so I don’t think there is an age limit on when they are able to sell a car. I absolutely love the car though and I have a few long road trips planned. I paid probably too much for the car but it was my dream specification and immaculate so I thought YOLO. Enjoy it when you get it they are amazing.

Well, just got off the phone to the main dealer that serviced it for 8 years.
Good car, good owner, serviced it on time every year and did not skimp on repairing anything that needed repairing.
Off to see it on Sunday. Hopefully driving it home.
Just reading your second paragraph, what does the main dealer mean by not skimp on repairs? Good car, good owner, serviced it on time every year and did not skimp on repairing anything that needed repairing.

Specifically have you confirmed that this car has never been involved in an accident?
I ask as this is often the reason for a car with a full McLaren service history to not qualify as “McLaren Approved”.
