Advice on a Career Change
Discussion
So in my 20s I went to college and then to university. Obtained my BSc in Computer Science. I then volunteered to work at a number of companies for so called experience. After a few years I then landed a job. Which I stayed in the sector for 10 years and then was made redundant from two companies along with a lot of people.
I then spent the next 6 months searching for a job with not much look. The sector moves pretty fast and unless you re skilled in a certain area it is hard to get a job.
So I then worked with my uncle, a retired electrician. I then completed my Electrical 2365 Level 2 and 3 Courses. Which I paid up to £5k for it, only to find out that nobody wants to employ someone at mid 30s, and in order to gain a Gold Card you need to work in employment for the Portfolio etc.
I then did an Apprenticeship in Fire and Security. I went to college for 3 years. I’ve currently been working in that sector for 7 years. The pay isn t great and the travel and on call are really getting to me.
So I m really not sure what to do.? I don t fancy doing it myself as I ve worked in domestic houses for 4 years and it s not great as people don t want to pay a lot for an Alarm or CCTV.
Ive thought about another trade but at 40 is it worth it?

If it's of any use, I left Financial Services after 21+ years to become a HGV Driver at age 40. When you consider I still had 28 years to get to state pension age at 40, so more years left to work than I'd already completed, it's not unreasonable to take a different career path in your 40s. No point being unhappy for that length of time if you have the desire, capability to do something about it, even taking into account the time taken to learn, qualify etc for your new trade.

What s wrong with how I ve written that sentence? I m physically fit yes, I don t mind shift work and I m based by Liverpool.
Mate, You have a degree, I left school at 15.I don't mean to be a pedant but it would not harm job applications etc. if you could improve your English a little.
It's not I "done" my Electrical 2365, it's I did my Electrical 2365.
As for your "uncle whose retired", that should be, "uncle who is retired" or "who's retired."
Now, you are probably annoyed with me for pointing that out but I do have a career suggestion for you, but it would have to be by email.

Didn’t you write this Same post a few months back, and as I also am a fire alarm engineer we worked out you’re underpaid in your company
Minimum you should be paid is 38k for multi skilled, I’m on a 50k basic, there’s plenty of companies who won’t make you do call out.
Change the environment not the job role

I’ve tried looking. All want call out minimum and pay is around £34k that even the ones with 3 letters and the blue triangle. Minimum you should be paid is 38k for multi skilled, I m on a 50k basic, there s plenty of companies who won t make you do call out.

I left ADT on 38k in 2024, and I see jobs everyday on indeed for 38-45k and constantly have recruiters calling offering the same for wales At ADT you get 5% commission on parts that you sell too, batteries new heads etc, patch work so not driving far

There isn’t much around Liverpool. Some I’ve never heard of but I’ll try those two and see if they have any roles that are available. At ADT you get 5% commission on parts that you sell too, batteries new heads etc, patch work so not driving far

If you could email me that would be fantastic. Thank you. I don't mean to be a pedant but it would not harm job applications etc. if you could improve your English a little.

Why it s grammatically correct.
But this sentence isn't. It should be: Why? It's grammatically correct.
Now don't go getting the hump, I'm trying to help you mate.
It would do no harm to get someone to proof read your CV/covering letter/job applications.
Anyway, I have sent you an email that may (or may not) be of interest to you.

I’m not getting the hump. As I say I maybe dyslexic. So you should not judge someone. It should be: Why? It's grammatically correct.
