Dilemma but not a serious one
Discussion
A while ago I bought a van, I used it for years and have basically ran it into the ground, I spent the odd weekend fixing and tinkering with it, replacing several worn out parts over the years, it basically came to the end of its life after having done 240k miles, it still ran sweet but everything else was kaput on it. I could have replaced more bits and kept it running but I just didn't have the time or the inclination to do anything else to it, we got our money's worth out of it and it owed us nothing. I've since bought another van and will probably do the same.
I got offered £150 PX for it so I told my mate who dabbles in the odd vehicle and he bought it for £160 instead, it was probably worth closer to 6 or £700 really as I've not seen another one for less, even ones none running, its a 2015 Citroen dispatch. Anyway the long and short of it is I'm the only one he knows that can fix stuff like that without charging an absolute arm and a leg, I've done the odd job for him before now on some of his other cars, usually just for a bit of beer money and he's now hinting that the van needs this and that doing to it.
I reckon he's going to approach me to fix it for him, is that not crazy? I could have done the work on the van myself and benefitted by getting more money for it but I simply didn't want to, or had the time to do it. I sold it him for pennies so I didn't have to do anything to it, yet if I fix it for him now I'll still have done all the work anyway and got virtually nothing for doing so this time. Its things like the track control arms that need changing which are an absolute pain in the arse to do on those vans and its cold wet and miserable out there.
Would you do the work to "help a mate out"? or just say "are you actually taking the piss"

There s no dilemma, serious or otherwise: he hasn t asked you anything or even hinted at anything yet.
No but he will, he keeps getting me to show him parts on Ebay 'because I know the van'. You know things always start off small, the odd little hint here and there until they finally come out with "Like I've said the last 100 times, cant you help me out just this once".Doofus said:
Once again; tell him to f
k, off before we tell you.
You see I will be able to tell him this as I think it is a piss take, and a blatant one at that, I wouldn't be able to tell him he smells though so with any luck he may see his arse and stop coming round.
k, off before we tell you.He did say recently that he called into a random garage and walked up to a mechanic sat having a break and asked him if he would jack his van up for him and investigate the knocking sound (for free). Apparently he was quite put out that the mechanic told him to f
k off. Honestly I'm not making all this up, its how he is, I don't think he's ever paid full price for anything.g7jhp said:
Offer to buy it back and then sell it on. End of hassle.
I did want to keep it as the engine in it or at least bits of it would fit straight into the more modern equivalent and I keep seeing the odd newer van for sale with a damaged engine, cam belt snapped and things like that. I could repair it for next to nothing and make a tidy profit. But I simply didn't have anywhere to store it long term so it had to go.Frane Selak said:

When you sold it to him, what did you expect him to do with it?Sheepshanks said:

I expected him to punt it on for a couple of hundred profit to be honest, he didnt have anywhere to keep it either really. But since his own car has broke down and he is now using the van. He has had a new screen fitted to it, (which he bartered the bloke down on)Frane Selak said:
